For the first time in the country’s history, new series and redesigned banknotes bearing the signature of Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur have been released into circulation. The newly introduced notes include denominations of Tk 1,000, Tk 50 and Tk 20.
On the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, customers will be able to exchange these new notes on a limited scale at selected branches of certain banks from today, Monday (June 2).
According to Bangladesh Bank sources, the distribution of the new Tk 20, Tk 50 and Tk 1,000 notes began on Sunday (June 1) at the central bank’s Motijheel office and through a few commercial banks. However, due to limited stock, it will not be possible to distribute the new notes to district towns outside Dhaka before Eid.
Bangladesh Bank has informed that customers will be able to collect these new notes from specific branches of 11 banks. These banks are Sonali, Janata, Agrani, Pubali, Uttara, Rupali, Dutch-Bangla, Islami, Al-Arafah Islami, BRAC and Eastern Bank. Each bank will decide independently which of its branches will offer the note exchange facility.
In a press release from the Department of Communication and Publications (DCP) of Bangladesh Bank, it was stated that all denominations from Tk 2 to Tk 1,000 will gradually be issued in a new series designed on the theme of “Historic and Archaeological Architecture of Bangladesh.” In the first phase, the newly designed Tk 1,000, Tk 50 and Tk 20 notes are being released to the public.
All currently circulating paper notes and coins will remain valid and in use alongside the new notes.
In addition, non-exchangeable sample versions of the new Tk 1,000, Tk 50 and Tk 20 notes have been printed for currency collectors. These can be purchased at face value from the Bangladesh Bank Museum in Mirpur.
