Massive Fire Destroys TCB Essentials in Rajshahi Godown, Sparks Supply Concerns

Rajshahi, Apr 30 — A devastating fire tore through a warehouse of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in Rajshahi’s Paba upazila early Thursday, destroying a large stock of essential commodities meant for low-income consumers.

The blaze erupted around 3:00 AM at a godown near the Naohata College Crossing area. Residents first noticed thick plumes of smoke billowing from the facility before flames rapidly engulfed the structure. Within a short time, the fire spread across the entire warehouse, fueled by highly flammable goods stored inside.

Essential Goods Reduced to Ashes

According to eyewitness accounts, thousands of liters of bottled soybean oil melted in the intense heat and spread across the floor, worsening the fire. In addition, large quantities of lentils, sugar, and other daily necessities were completely destroyed. The structure itself suffered significant damage, with walls, doors, and internal fittings scorched and partially collapsed.

Preliminary estimates suggest that government-supplied goods worth several lakh taka may have been lost, although officials have yet to confirm the exact financial damage.

Firefighters Face Challenging Conditions

Fire service personnel responded promptly after receiving alerts from locals. With support from residents, firefighters worked for hours to bring the blaze under control. However, efforts were hampered by the cramped interior of the warehouse and the presence of combustible materials, particularly cooking oil, which intensified the flames.

Authorities suspect an electrical short circuit may have triggered the incident, though a full investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause.

Disruption Hits Low-Income Families

The fire has had an immediate impact on local residents who depend on subsidized TCB goods. Many people arrived at the distribution point expecting to collect essential items, only to find the facility destroyed.

One resident, identified as Matin, said he had come after hearing a public announcement about product distribution. Instead, he found the warehouse burnt and was forced to return home empty-handed, highlighting the disruption to vital supply chains.

Panic in Densely Populated Area

The incident has caused widespread concern among local traders and pedestrians. Given the location’s dense population and commercial activity, many fear the situation could have escalated into a far more serious disaster if the fire had spread beyond the godown.

Authorities Begin Assessment

Officials from local administration and law enforcement, including the officer-in-charge of Paba Police Station, have acknowledged the incident and confirmed that further steps will be taken after a detailed inspection.

Meanwhile, relevant authorities are working to assess the total extent of damage and evaluate how quickly the disrupted supply of essential goods can be restored.
