Canada’s Top Trade Official Begins First Bangladesh Visit to Boost Economic Partnership
Bangladesh: Sara Wilshaw, Canada’s Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for International Trade and Chief Trade Commissioner, has arrived in Bangladesh on her first official visit, with the aim of strengthening economic cooperation and exploring new avenues for trade and investment.
According to the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka, Wilshaw — who oversees Canada’s global trade promotion network — is scheduled to meet senior government representatives, major business chambers, and leading private-sector companies during her stay.
Her discussions will centre on expanding collaboration in agriculture, clean technology, and investment, as well as identifying ways to better utilise Canada’s long-standing development contributions to Bangladesh, which have surpassed $6.3 billion since 1971.
The High Commission highlighted that bilateral trade climbed to USD 3.27 billion (around Tk 27,537 crore) in 2024, underscoring the growing economic ties between the two nations and the potential for deeper engagement.
Canada also reiterated its commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s path toward LDC graduation, broader economic growth, and democratic progress.
