Uncontrolled Fatty Liver Can Lead to Cirrhosis: Prof Dr. Mashhud (Part- 2)

Prof. Dr. Mian Mashhud Ahmad, Senior Gastroenterologist at Labaid Specialized Hospital, Dhaka, has warned that uncontrolled fatty liver can progress to cirrhosis and even liver cancer.
In an exclusive interview with The Reporter 24, Dr. Ahmad, who holds MBBS, MD, Ph.D., and FRCP (Edin) degrees and previously served as Professor & Head of Gastroenterology at Dhaka Medical College & Hospital, shared insights into the dietary and lifestyle factors contributing to fatty liver disease.
He emphasized that the lack of healthy food choices is a major concern. “We do not find wheat-based foods, low-fat options, vegetable salads, non-fried fish, or non-fried chicken. Everything is fried—breads are fried, breads are oily. Wholemeal bread is not available in hotels,” he noted.
Highlighting poor dietary habits, he said, “People continue consuming fried and fatty foods. Carbohydrates, meat, and fish—all are consumed in unhealthy forms. Good-quality fish and meat, which I previously mentioned, are often ignored.”
Dr. Ahmad also pointed out that a lack of physical activity and the rising consumption of sugary sodas are contributing to the increasing cases of fatty liver disease. “Most people, whether elite or non-elite, when they have money and are busy, opt for sodas. This is a major factor in fatty liver development,” he warned.
Regarding the consequences of uncontrolled fatty liver, he stressed, “It can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.”
