Dhaka Sends New Letter to Delhi Seeking Hasina’s Return
Bangladesh: Bangladesh has formally requested India to hand over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death in absentia for crimes against humanity.
Dhaka issued a new diplomatic letter to New Delhi, invoking the countries’ bilateral extradition treaty and urging India to transfer her “without delay,” diplomatic sources confirmed.
According to officials, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi delivered the latest formal note to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) last Friday.
This marks Dhaka’s first official communication since the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) delivered its verdict on November 17, 2025, sentencing Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death for their alleged role in last year’s violent crackdown on student protesters.
Background: Earlier Requests Ignored
Although this is the first extradition request following the tribunal’s judgment, Bangladesh previously sent letters to India on December 20 and 27 last year after Hasina fled to New Delhi in August. Indian authorities did not respond to those earlier communications.
In a statement issued after the tribunal’s ruling, Bangladesh’s foreign ministry warned that granting refuge to individuals convicted of crimes against humanity would constitute an “extremely unfriendly act” and signal disregard for justice. The ministry added that under the India-Bangladesh extradition treaty, handing over the convicted individuals is India’s “obligatory responsibility.”
Tribunal Verdict and Charges
The ICT-BD found Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun guilty on multiple counts related to the July 2024 student uprising.
The United Nations estimated that up to 1,400 people were killed during the protest crackdown, which the tribunal concluded was carried out under direct orders from senior government leadership.
Hasina has been living in exile in New Delhi since her ouster in August 2024.
India’s Position
Following the tribunal’s verdict, the MEA said it had “noted” the decision and reaffirmed India’s commitment to the “best interests of the people of Bangladesh.” The ministry added that India would continue to engage “constructively with all stakeholders” to support peace, democracy and stability in its neighbouring country.
However, India did not directly comment on the new extradition request—continuing its silence on similar appeals made earlier.
What Comes Next
With the latest diplomatic note delivered, Dhaka is once again waiting for New Delhi’s official reply. Whether India will act under the extradition treaty or maintain its current non-committal stance remains uncertain. The development adds new tension to an already sensitive chapter in Bangladesh-India relations.

ভারতে আশ্রয় নেওয়ার পর গত বছরের ২০ ও ২৭ ডিসেম্বর শেখ হাসিনাকে হস্তান্তরের জন্য বাংলাদেশ দুটি চিঠি পাঠিয়েছিল। কিন্তু সেসব চিঠির কোনো জবাব দেয়নি ভারত। নতুন রায়ের পর এবার প্রথমবারের মতো প্রত্যর্পণ চুক্তির ধারা উল্লেখ করে চিঠি পাঠানো হলো।
রায় ঘোষণার দিনই পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয় এক বিবৃতিতে জানায়, মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধে দণ্ডিত ব্যক্তিদের আশ্রয় দেওয়া “অবন্ধুসুলভ আচরণ” এবং ন্যায়বিচারের প্রতি অবজ্ঞা হবে। দুই দেশের বিদ্যমান প্রত্যর্পণ চুক্তি অনুযায়ী দণ্ডিত ব্যক্তিদের ফেরত দেওয়া ভারতের “অবশ্যপালনীয় দায়িত্ব” বলে উল্লেখ করা হয়।
ট্রাইব্যুনালের রায় ও অভিযোগ
ট্রাইব্যুনাল ২০২৪ সালের জুলাইয়ের শিক্ষার্থী আন্দোলনের সময়কার সহিংস দমন-পীড়নে নির্দেশ ও তদারকির অভিযোগে শেখ হাসিনা, আসাদুজ্জামান খান এবং সাবেক পুলিশপ্রধান চৌধুরী আবদুল্লাহ আল-মামুনকে দোষী সাব্যস্ত করে। জাতিসংঘের হিসাব অনুযায়ী ওই দমন-পীড়নে প্রায় ১,৪০০ মানুষের মৃত্যুর অভিযোগ উঠেছিল। ক্ষমতাচ্যুত হওয়ার পর ২০২৪ সালের আগস্ট থেকে শেখ হাসিনা দিল্লিতে অবস্থান করছেন।
ভারতের প্রতিক্রিয়া
রায়ের পর ভারতের পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয় জানায়, তারা বিষয়টি “নজরে নিয়েছে” এবং বাংলাদেশে শান্তি, গণতন্ত্র ও স্থিতিশীলতার স্বার্থে সকল পক্ষের সঙ্গে গঠনমূলকভাবে কাজ চালিয়ে যেতে চায়। তবে সর্বশেষ প্রত্যর্পণ অনুরোধ সম্পর্কে ভারত এখনো কোনো আনুষ্ঠানিক মন্তব্য করেনি।
