BFIU Seeks Banking Records of NCP Spokesperson Asif Mahmud
The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has requested detailed banking information regarding Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a former adviser to the interim government.
Officials familiar with the matter said the BFIU, which operates as the anti-money laundering arm of Bangladesh Bank, issued formal letters to all scheduled banks on Monday.
The directive asks financial institutions to provide comprehensive information about any accounts held by Asif following a complaint received by the agency.
Banks have been instructed to submit relevant documents within three working days. The requested materials include account opening forms, transaction histories and other supporting financial records linked to his banking activities.
Efforts to independently verify the development were not immediately successful.
Asif Mahmud was among three student representatives appointed as advisers in the interim government formed after the July uprising. During his tenure, he was responsible for the ministries of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, as well as Youth and Sports.
Ahead of the 13th parliamentary election, Asif and fellow adviser Mahfuj Alam stepped down from their positions on December 10 last year. Earlier, NCP Convener and current lawmaker Nahid Islam had also resigned from the interim administration.
Asif currently serves as the spokesperson of the National Citizen Party.
