Bangladesh: Tragic Road Crash Kills 14, Including Newlywed Couple
Bagerhat, Bangladesh: A devastating road accident on the Khulna–Mongla highway has claimed the lives of 14 people, including a newly married couple, turning what was meant to be the start of a new life into an unimaginable tragedy.
The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon near Belai Bridge in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat when a microbus carrying wedding passengers collided head-on with a bus belonging to the Bangladesh Navy. The microbus was transporting members of the groom’s family and relatives shortly after the wedding ceremony.
Among those killed was Marzia Akter (Mitu), the newlywed bride. Her hands still bore the deep red color of wedding henna, and she was dressed in the same brown bridal saree she had worn during the ceremony.
After completing the wedding rituals at her parents’ home, she had set out for her husband’s house, marking the beginning of her married life. Tragically, she never reached her destination.
Marzia was the daughter of Abdus Salam Morol, a resident of Naksha village under Amadi Union in Koyra upazila of Khulna. She had married Ahadur Rahman Sabbir, son of Abdur Razzaq from Shyalabunia village in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat, on Wednesday night. Following the ceremony, members of the groom’s family stayed overnight at the bride’s house. On Thursday, they began their journey to Mongla in a microbus along with relatives from both sides.
During the journey, the fatal collision occurred at the Belai Bridge area of the Khulna–Mongla highway.
After the crash, several bodies were first taken to Rampal Upazila Health Complex. Later, the injured and deceased were transported to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared many of them dead upon arrival. Ten bodies, including that of the bride and groom, were kept at the hospital morgue. Hospital premises quickly filled with grieving relatives, their cries reflecting the scale of the tragedy.
Police confirmed that the microbus was carrying 15 people, including the driver. Fourteen of them died, while one survivor remains under treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge Jafar Ahmed of Katakhali Highway Police Station in Bagerhat said that all the victims were passengers of the microbus.
According to police, the vehicle carried 11 members of the groom’s family, three members of the bride’s family, and the driver.
The heartbreaking incident has drawn widespread sympathy on social media after a video showing the bride’s covered body being taken to the morgue circulated online, prompting many to express grief and condolences.
