Bangladesh: NCP leader Asif Mahmud Discloses Bank Details, Says Total Deposits Around Tk 1.55 Million

Bangladesh: NCP leader Asif Mahmud Discloses Bank Details, Says Total Deposits Around Tk 1.55 Million

Former adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh and spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP), Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, has publicly disclosed details of his own and his family members’ bank accounts, revealing total deposits of approximately Tk 1.55 million across nine accounts.

He shared the information at a press conference held Wednesday evening at the NCP’s temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka. The move came after the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) sought information on his bank accounts.

According to Asif, he maintains two personal bank accounts, while his father has five accounts, and his mother and wife each hold one.

Of the total disclosed amount, Tk 978,556 is in his two personal accounts, while Tk 569,478 is held in the accounts of other family members.

    Breakdown of Accounts

Asif said one of his accounts, a savings account with Sonali Bank, contains Tk 9,930. The other is a salary account opened during his tenure in government.

Over a 16-month period, he received an average monthly salary and allowances of Tk 165,000, along with government TA/DA bills for five foreign visits.

He stated that total credits to the salary account amounted to Tk 8,581,000, while withdrawals totaled Tk 7,603,000. Combined with the savings account, his current balance stands at Tk 978,556.

Regarding his father, a schoolteacher by profession, Asif said the five accounts together show total deposits of Tk 547,711. His father had taken a service loan of Tk 1 million, from which Tk 639,746 remains outstanding. After adjusting the loan liability, he is effectively in debt by approximately Tk 82,035.

Asif further disclosed that his mother’s account holds Tk 21,154 and his wife’s account contains Tk 613.

    Background and Asset Declaration

Following the July mass uprising, an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus was formed on August 8, 2024.

Asif was one of three student representatives appointed to the advisory council. Before resigning from the government in December last year, he submitted a statement of assets to the Cabinet Division.

According to the asset declaration published by the government two days before the 13th national parliamentary election, his total assets were valued at Tk 1,534,717.

At that time, while other advisers disclosed both personal and spousal assets, Asif provided only his own financial details.

Addressing the press, he said that despite already submitting a full statement of income and assets to the authorities upon his resignation, he felt it necessary to make the bank account information public again amid renewed discussion and what he described as attempts to “create confusion.”

Allegations Against BFIU and Political Motive

Asif alleged that the BFIU had requested bank account information for 56 individuals on Tuesday, but only his case was selectively circulated in a journalists’ group. He claimed this selective disclosure indicated an intention beyond routine investigation.

“If they genuinely want to conduct an inquiry, they are free to do so. But isolating my case and encouraging it to be reported separately suggests an attempt at character assassination,” he said.

He further alleged that certain individuals disgruntled during his time in office, as well as the Awami League—ousted during the mass uprising—were behind what he termed a smear campaign. He also claimed that some media outlets owned by “questionable” individuals were amplifying the issue, while responsible media were not.

    Reference to Khaleda Zia

While speaking about alleged media-driven narratives, Asif also referred to former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

He claimed that in the past, she had been labeled as having misappropriated orphan funds and imprisoned based on what he described as a manufactured narrative.

“In Bangladesh, it has been possible to construct false narratives through the entire media establishment and various agencies. But people later understood those claims were untrue,” he said.

Asif concluded by saying that by publicly sharing his and his family’s bank account information, he aimed to eliminate any speculation. “There should be no mystery about what is in my accounts. Everything is now open to the public,” he added.

Several NCP leaders, including Monira Sharmin and Humayra Noor, were present at the press conference.
