Dhaka Medical College has been declared closed for an indefinite period by the authorities. The closure will take effect from Sundays (June 22).
According to an official notice signed by the principal of DMC, Professor Dr Md Kamrul Alam, all academic activities for MBBS students will remain suspended from Sunday until further notice. Additionally, students have been instructed to vacate their dormitories by 12 PM on Sunday.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the Academic Council held on Saturday (June 21).
However, the authorities have clarified that students participating in the university’s professional MBBS examinations, as well as foreign students, will be exempt from this directive.
According to sources, students of Dhaka Medical College had been protesting for several days with five major demands, including the issue of accommodation.
The primary demands of the students included:
Alternative arrangements for the dormitories that have been declared uninhabitable, approval of the budget for a new dormitory and academic building, ensuring transparency in project implementation through student representation.
The protesting students had earlier warned that they would suspend academic activities themselves if their demands were not met.
However, before that could happen, the administration formally announced the indefinite closure of the college.
