Young Entrepreneur Rahat Raja Cultivates Success with Red Sugarcane in Satkhira

After completing his studies, young entrepreneur Rahat Raja from Satkhira ventured into freelancing and journalism.
However, his deep-rooted passion for agriculture led him to embrace farming as a profession. Without seeking external support, he invested his own earnings to establish Brikkho Bari, a thriving agricultural farm in Ghonar, Satkhira Sadar Upazila.
Three years ago, Rahat took a bold step by leasing two bighas of land and cultivating a unique variety of red sugarcane from the Philippines. This variety, known for its rich sweetness and superior taste, has gained considerable demand in the local market. Alongside sugarcane farming, he has expanded his ventures by setting up a cattle farm and a mango orchard in Kukhurali, a suburb of Satkhira.
From Passion to Prosperity
Born to the late Abdur Rahim and Majida Begum, Rahat Raja (29) is a determined entrepreneur. He is married to Fatema Khatun (25), and together they have a one-year-old daughter, Orni Sabrin.
After earning a diploma in agriculture from Satkhira City College, Rahat chose not to chase a government job. Instead, he pursued freelancing and journalism before committing himself fully to agriculture.
To fund his dream, he sold his cherished iPhone and invested Tk 200,000 to start sugarcane farming. His first year’s expenses, including land lease and necessary farming equipment, consumed the entire capital. However, from the second year onwards, his annual investment dropped to just Tk 50,000, while his earnings surged to Tk 200,000–250,000 after expenses.
The rapid growth and profitability of the red sugarcane have painted a bright future for Rahat. Inspired by his success, local farmers are now showing keen interest in cultivating this variety.
His farm has also created employment opportunities for four to five workers, further contributing to the local economy.
A Rising Trend in Agriculture
Rahat’s farm not only cultivates sugarcane but also grows seasonal fruits like red and yellow dragon fruit and Maltese oranges.
Due to the increasing demand for Philippine sugarcane, he has expanded his business by supplying seeds to farmers in Chattogram, Sylhet, and Bogura, generating additional income.
"The Philippine sugarcane is gaining popularity in Bangladesh due to its high yield, thin skin, and exceptional sweetness," said Rahat. "This variety requires minimal effort—just monthly pesticide spraying and occasional leaf pruning. The ideal planting season is winter, with seeds sown a foot apart."
Agriculture: The Future for Young Entrepreneurs
Satkhira Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Monirul Islam praised Rahat’s efforts, stating, "Young entrepreneurs like him are transforming agriculture into a profitable business, strengthening the rural economy.
Due to its higher market value and lower production costs, farmers across Rajshahi, Faridpur, and Satkhira are finding success with this sugarcane variety."
Encouraging other young people to follow his path, Rahat advises aspiring entrepreneurs to invest in agriculture rather than chasing jobs.
His story serves as an inspiring testament to how innovation, dedication, and smart investment in farming can lead to a prosperous future.
