US Moves to Deploy Second Aircraft Carrier to Middle East as Iran Talks Continue

US Moves to Deploy Second Aircraft Carrier to Middle East as Iran Talks Continue

Feb 13, 2026: The United States is preparing to send a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, signaling a further buildup of military presence in the region amid ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran.

US President Donald Trump appeared to confirm the development by sharing a media report on his Truth Social account stating that the Pentagon is preparing another carrier deployment.

The move would see the USS Gerald R. Ford join the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has already been operating in the region along with guided-missile destroyers.

According to US officials cited in multiple reports, the Pentagon has instructed the military to prepare the carrier strike group for deployment.

The USS Gerald R. Ford, currently in the Caribbean Sea, is expected to head toward the Middle East, increasing the number of US naval assets positioned near Iran.

    Diplomatic Track Still Open

The military reinforcement comes as Washington continues indirect diplomatic engagement with Tehran over its nuclear programme. President Trump recently hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where discussions reportedly included Iran policy.

Following the meeting, Trump said negotiations with Iran would continue to determine whether a deal could be reached. He reiterated that diplomacy remains his preferred outcome but warned that alternative measures could follow if talks fail.

Last week, US and Iranian representatives held indirect discussions in Oman — their first such contact in months. Both sides have publicly expressed willingness to continue dialogue, although no new meeting dates have been formally announced.

Iran’s senior official Ali Larijani stated that Tehran is negotiating solely with the United States and not with Israel. He accused Israel of attempting to interfere with the diplomatic process.

Trump later dismissed suggestions that Netanyahu was pressuring him to abandon talks, telling reporters that discussions with Iran would proceed as long as progress remains possible.

He added that a potential agreement could be reached in the coming weeks if negotiations move quickly.

Key Disputes Over Nuclear and Missile Programmes

President Trump has said any agreement must ensure that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons or expand its missile capabilities. Iran, however, maintains that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes and denies pursuing nuclear weapons.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently stated that the country’s missile programme is a defensive matter and not open to negotiation.

Tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States escalated significantly last year after Israel launched strikes targeting Iranian military officials and nuclear facilities.

Iran responded with missile attacks, some of which penetrated Israeli air defenses. The US later joined the campaign, conducting strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities before a ceasefire was established.

Trump has previously claimed that US strikes severely damaged Iran’s nuclear capabilities, though questions remain regarding the status of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles.

Tehran continues to assert its right to enrich uranium under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

    Regional and Domestic Developments

During a prior visit by Netanyahu in December, Trump warned that renewed Iranian military development could prompt further US action. In the weeks that followed, protests erupted in Iran, prompting a heavy security response from authorities.

Separately, reports indicated that thousands of Starlink satellite internet kits were brought into Iran after internet restrictions were imposed during unrest. The reports have not been officially confirmed by US authorities.

    Growing Strategic Pressure

The deployment of an additional aircraft carrier underscores Washington’s strategy of combining diplomatic engagement with a visible military presence.

While US officials emphasize that negotiations remain ongoing, the increased naval deployment reflects continued caution amid uncertainty over the outcome of talks.

As discussions continue, regional stability and nuclear negotiations remain central to US foreign policy in the Middle East.
