At the forefront of this trend is Merlin Bird ID, an application developed by Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology. According to director Jessie Barry, the platform has achieved 42 million total downloads globally, including 12 million downloads in 2026 alone.
Technological Growth: Launched in 2014 with the capacity to recognize 285 common species via photos, the app now uses artificial intelligence to identify roughly 11,000 species—nearly matching the total number of bird species worldwide.
Aural Identification: Cornell reports that its Sound ID feature has facilitated 4.4 billion individual bird identifications, opening up nature observation for individuals who prefer listening over tracking wildlife visually.
Demographic Shift: The application has heavily resonated with younger audiences, with many users sharing their discoveries and nature-focused content across platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

Software engineer Sam Lewis created the app Lifer after utilizing Merlin for years. Lifer borrows concepts from monster-collecting games and collectible card trading, allowing users to earn digital cards decorated with hand-drawn watercolors based on the rarity and recording quality of their sightings.
"They are real-life Pokémon, really, if you think about it," Lewis noted, pointing out how the gamification encourages physical outdoor activity while maintaining a modern technological edge. To protect vulnerable wildlife, Lifer conceals the precise coordinates of rare breeding birds during sensitive periods and funnels qualifying user data directly into the Global Biodiversity Information Facility to support global conservation efforts.

Despite the massive surge in popularity, seasoned ornithologists and conservation groups advise caution, noting that automated applications occasionally misidentify species and should not be entirely relied upon for formal scientific record-keeping.
