US Engages in Secret Talks with Hamas Over Hostage Release

In a major twist, the Trump administration has reportedly held secret discussions with Hamas concerning the release of American hostages in Gaza, according to a report by Axios citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
This marks the first time the United States has engaged directly with Hamas, which was dubbed as a terrorist organization by the US in 1997.
According to the report, negotiations were led by Adam Boehler, the U.S. Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, in Doha over the past few weeks.
The US had informed Israel about the potential for such talks; notwithstanding, Israeli officials learned about the actual engagement through other channels.
Primary focus of the discussions was the release of American hostages, but sources indicated that broader negotiations aimed at securing the freedom of all remaining hostages and establishing a long-term truce were also considered. However, no agreement has been reached so far.
Meanwhile, Steve Witkoff, a special envoy to the White House, had planned to meet with the Prime Minister of Qatar to discuss a potential ceasefire.
Such visit was canceled after it became apparent that Hamas was not interested in pursuing the negotiations further, according to a US official.
President Trump has previously issued strong warnings to Hamas, threatening severe consequences and even suggesting a potential US takeover of Gaza.
The decision to pursue secret talks with Hamas reflects a significant departure from the approaches taken by previous administrations.
