A secret UK resettlement scheme has brought 4,500 Afghans to safety after a major data breach exposed thousands to potential danger from the Taliban.
In February 2022, personal information of nearly 19,000 Afghan applicants—including names and contact details—was mistakenly leaked. The breach remained undisclosed until August 2023, when some of the data surfaced on Facebook.
The UK government quietly launched a new programme for those affected, but used a super-injunction to prevent public disclosure of the incident and the relocations.
The matter only came to light after a High Court judge lifted the gagging order on Tuesday, revealing both the breach and the secret resettlement effort.
