Trump Touts Economic Revival, Issues Stark Warning to Iran in Lengthy State of the Union

US President Donald Trump delivered an expansive State of the Union address to Congress, outlining his administration’s economic agenda, defending his tariff policies, and cautioning Iran over its nuclear ambitions. 

The speech, which ran for more than an hour and 29 minutes, set a new record for the longest State of the Union address, surpassing the previous mark held by Bill Clinton in 2000.

The chamber was filled with prominent figures, including First Lady Melania Trump, the president’s children, Vice-President JD Vance, and four justices of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Economic ‘Turnaround’ and Tariff Defense

Trump declared that his first year back in office had produced what he called a “turnaround for the ages,” crediting his trade policies and tariffs for revitalising the US economy. He described the recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down several of his global tariff measures as “disappointing” but insisted that alternative legal pathways would keep his import taxes intact.

Although he announced a revised global tariff rate following the court’s decision, uncertainty remains among US trading partners regarding the status of recently negotiated trade agreements. Nations including the UK, India and the European Union have reportedly sought clarity as Washington adjusts its approach.

The president argued that tariffs are strengthening domestic industry and suggested they could eventually reduce reliance on income taxes. However, critics note that congressional approval will be required to extend certain tariff measures beyond their current timeframe.

Inflation and Cost of Living

Addressing voter concerns about affordability, Trump said he had inherited high inflation levels. While inflation spiked during the early years of former President Joe Biden’s administration, economic data show price growth has since moderated, though it remains above the Federal Reserve’s long-term target.

Trump pledged to lower healthcare expenses, criticising the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. Despite past Republican efforts to repeal the legislation, he focused on price transparency and reducing prescription drug costs rather than dismantling the law outright.

Tough Talk on Crime and Immigration

The president renewed calls for stricter crime policies, accusing “pro-crime” politicians of enabling repeat offenders. He highlighted several violent incidents and urged Congress to pass legislation aimed at preventing the release of habitual offenders.

During the speech, Democratic Congressman Al Green was escorted from the chamber after protesting. Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar also vocally objected at one point before walking out.

Trump further advocated for the proposed Save America Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration. Supporters say it would safeguard election integrity, while opponents argue it could disenfranchise eligible voters.

Warning to Iran Over Nuclear Programme

Turning to foreign policy, Trump addressed escalating tensions with Iran. Referring to last year’s US operation targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, he reiterated that Washington would not permit Tehran to develop nuclear weapons.

“My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy,” he said, while adding that the US would “never” allow Iran to become a nuclear-armed state. The president did not disclose whether military options remain under active consideration if diplomatic talks collapse.

Honouring Service Members and Public Figures

Trump used the occasion to pay tribute to National Guard members who were shot in Washington, announcing that one of the injured service members would receive the Purple Heart. He also recognised the family of a fallen guard member in attendance.

In addition, he said he plans to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the goaltender of the US men’s hockey team following their Olympic gold medal victory.

A Partisan Atmosphere

Throughout the address, Trump largely focused on energising his Republican base, offering limited overtures to Democrats. Observers noted that the speech underscored deep partisan divisions in Congress, particularly on issues such as healthcare, election laws, tariffs and social policy.

As lawmakers left the chamber, questions lingered over the future of US trade policy, domestic affordability challenges, and the direction of relations with Iran in the months ahead.
