Trump Halts Planned Iran Strike Following Urgent Requests From Gulf Leaders Amid Active Peace Talks

Trump Halts Planned Iran Strike Following Urgent Requests From Gulf Leaders Amid Active Peace Talks

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has put a planned military strike against Iran on hold. The decision follows direct requests from Gulf Arab leaders, who indicated that high-stakes diplomatic talks are currently underway.

Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump stated that the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reached out to request the temporary pause.

He noted that he had received assurances regarding a potential diplomatic breakthrough that would be "very acceptable" to Washington, emphasizing his core mandate: "NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS FOR IRAN!"

Despite the pause, the U.S. President maintained a firm stance, warning that the American military remains fully prepared to launch a comprehensive, large-scale assault against Iran at a moment's notice should negotiations collapse.

In response, a high-ranking Iranian military commander issued a stern warning to Washington, cautioning the U.S. against repeating "strategic mistakes and miscalculations." Following the announcement, global crude prices registered a sharp decline.

Rising Domestic Pressure on the White House

The halt in military action comes at a challenging political moment for the Trump administration, marked by slumping domestic approval ratings and a sharp decline in public support for the war.

According to a fresh New York Times/Siena poll, approximately 64% of voters believe the initial decision to launch a war against Iran was incorrect, while only 37% approve of Trump’s overall presidential performance.

The growing public discontent over the conflict, coupled with economic and immigration anxieties, underscores a significant hurdle for the Republican party ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

The war ignited on February 28, 2026, when combined U.S. and Israeli forces launched devastating precision airstrikes across Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with heavy drone and missile salvos targeting Israeli positions and American assets stationed across the Gulf.

    Gulf Fears of Retaliation

A primary factor driving the Gulf states' urgent diplomacy is the profound fear of how Tehran might respond to a renewed wave of American bombardments.

Security analysts note that Iran retains a formidable arsenal of long-range drones and ballistic missiles. Gulf leaders are highly concerned that a fresh escalation could see Iran target critical civilian infrastructure in neighboring countries—including major airports, petrochemical plants, and vital desalination facilities that supply drinking water as summer temperatures rise across the region.

Addressing journalists later on Tuesday, Trump described the pause as a "very positive development," though he remained cautious, noting that previous diplomatic openings had ultimately fallen through.

However, he expressed optimism that a deal could be reached this time, adding, "If we can do that without bombing the hell out of them, I would be very happy."

    The Stalemate Over Ceasefire Demands

While a temporary truce brokered in April has largely minimized major combat operations despite sporadic exchanges of fire, regional tension remains severe. Iran continues to maintain tight control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, effectively choking off nearly 20% of the world's maritime oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Tehran has defended the blockade as a direct countermeasure to the ongoing U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports, which Washington has used to exert economic pressure.

Diplomatic channels remain active, with Iran's foreign ministry confirming that written exchanges with Washington are continuing through Pakistani mediators. However, Iranian state media reported that the U.S. has yet to offer any substantial concessions.

According to semi-official Iranian news agencies, Tehran’s core conditions for a permanent settlement include:

    • An immediate halt to the war on all regional fronts, including ongoing Israeli operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

    • A total lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports.

    • Formal guarantees against future Western military actions, war damage compensation, and recognized sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

Washington, conversely, has reportedly presented five strict counter-conditions. These include a demand that Iran restrict its nuclear operations to a single site and transfer its entire inventory of highly enriched uranium directly to the United States.

In a notable shift from his earlier demands for a total termination of Iran's nuclear project, Trump recently hinted he might accept a 20-year freeze on the program to achieve a final breakthrough.

While Western allies maintain that Iran's enrichment activities are geared toward nuclear weapons development, Tehran consistently asserts that its program is strictly intended for peaceful, domestic purposes.
