Tarique Rahman Set to Begin New Chapter as Bangladesh Swears in Elected Government
Bangladesh is set to witness the formal inauguration of a newly elected government today, marking a significant political transition following last year’s mass uprising.
The swearing-in ceremony of Members of Parliament will take place in the morning, followed by the oath of the new cabinet in the afternoon, with Tarique Rahman expected to assume office as Prime Minister.
According to the National Parliament Secretariat, newly elected lawmakers and members of the Constitutional Reform Council will take their oath at 10:00 a.m. The cabinet members will be sworn in at 4:00 p.m.
In a departure from tradition, the cabinet oath ceremony will be held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building instead of the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Political observers describe the open-air ceremony as symbolic of a new political beginning.
The oath for Members of Parliament will be administered by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, while President Mohammad Shahabuddin will administer the oath to cabinet members.
Around 1,200 local and international guests, including representatives from South Asian countries, are expected to attend the ceremony.
Focus Shifts to Cabinet Formation
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 209 out of 299 contested seats in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, giving the party an absolute majority. With Tarique Rahman set to become Prime Minister for the first time, nationwide attention has now turned to the composition of his cabinet.
Party insiders indicate that the new cabinet is likely to combine senior political figures with younger leaders. Discussions also suggest the Prime Minister’s Office may be expanded with advisers and specialists from sectors such as administration, international development, and technology.
The leadership has emphasized regional balance, inclusion of women lawmakers, and representation from minority communities.
