Regional Ceasefire Frays as U.S. and Iran Exchange Fresh Air and Missile Strikes

Regional Ceasefire Frays as U.S. and Iran Exchange Fresh Air and Missile Strikes

DUBAI — A fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran is on the verge of collapse following successive rounds of military exchanges in southern Iran and the Persian Gulf.

The latest escalation has triggered a series of retaliatory missile attacks, harsh new economic sanctions, and a simultaneous intensification of Israel's military campaign in neighboring Lebanon.

The current conflict originally erupted on February 28, 2026, when joint U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes against Iran. While a tentative truce had paused full-scale combat during protracted peace talks, the latest hostilities mark the second time in three days that the U.S. has hit Iranian targets.

Tit-for-Tat Strikes Escalate Near the Strait of Hormuz

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the latest flare-up began when American forces intercepted five one-way attack drones launched by Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, alongside a sixth drone operated from a ground control station in the strategic port city of Bandar Abbas.

In response, the U.S. military executed what it described as "measured, purely defensive" strikes against the Bandar Abbas military installation to safeguard maritime traffic and U.S. personnel.

Hours later, in the early morning of Thursday, May 28, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retaliated by launching a ballistic missile at what it designated as the "source" of the American operations—an undisclosed U.S. airbase in the region.

While the IRGC withheld the exact location of the targeted facility, neighboring Kuwait announced that its military forces had successfully intercepted hostile drone and missile threats crossing into its territory.

The Kuwaiti government issued a stern condemnation, labeling the incident a "criminal Iranian attack" on its sovereign soil.

Diplomatic Deadlock and Maritime Extortion Claims

The spike in military actions comes amid deep frustrations over stalled peace negotiations. For nearly three months, the war has effectively choked the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial shipping channel responsible for one-fifth of the global liquefied natural gas and oil trade—causing international energy prices to surge.

In tandem with the military strikes, Washington has leveled heavy financial penalties against Tehran. The U.S. Treasury Department imposed strict sanctions on the newly formed "Persian Gulf Strait Authority" (PGSA), an Iranian agency established to collect transit fees from commercial vessels passing through the Strait.

Statement from the U.S. Treasury: U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed the PGSA as a "joke" and characterized the tolls as an attempt by the Iranian military to extort global maritime commerce due to a severe shortage of domestic cash. Bessent warned that any entity paying these fees would face severe penalties, adding that the U.S. is moving to cut off landing rights, refueling access, and ticket sales for all Iranian airlines.

Conversely, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baqai defended the maritime fees as standard compensation for "navigational services."

Baqai condemned the U.S. air raids as a gross violation of the standing ceasefire, asserting that Iran would take all necessary steps to safeguard its national sovereignty.

Trump Signals Impatience Over Peace Deal

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that Washington’s patience with the diplomatic process is wearing thin. Trump asserted that Iran was "negotiating on fumes" but noted that the U.S. remains unsatisfied with the current progress of the talks.

While Iranian state media recently publicized elements of a purported draft agreement—which allegedly included the complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from the Middle East and the reopening of the Strait—Trump maintained that Tehran has not yet met Washington's core requirements.

The president threatened a return to a large-scale bombing campaign if an agreement is not finalized soon, while simultaneously urging Gulf nations to sign onto the Abraham Accords to normalize ties with Israel.

Political analysts suggest that the U.S. administration's latest "defensive" military actions reflect growing frustration that Iran is using its leverage over global shipping to hold out for better terms, rather than capitulating to American pressure.

Secondary Front: Israeli Invasion of Southern Lebanon Deepens

As the U.S.-Iran truce deteriorates, the parallel conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed network in the Levant has violently expanded.

The Israeli military issued sweeping, mandatory evacuation orders for the entire population of southern Lebanon. Israeli ground forces have crossed the strategic Litani River, sparking intense, direct combat with Hezbollah fighters.

Heavy Israeli bombardments hit towns and villages across Nabatieh, Bint Jbeil, the Western Bekaa Valley, and the capital city of Beirut, marking the worst wave of violence since a separate Lebanese ceasefire was brokered last month.

International aid organizations have raised alarms over the situation, warning of an impending "absolute catastrophe" for the tens of thousands of displaced civilians fleeing the intensifying ground invasion.
