Passenger Boat Capsizes in Meghna River, 6 Reportedly Missing

A passenger trawler carrying 39 people capsized in the Meghna River near Hatiya, Noakhali, on Saturday afternoon, leaving six passengers missing. Locals were able to rescue 33 individuals following the incident.

The accident occurred around 3:00 PM as the trawler was en route from Bhasan Char to Karim Bazar Ghat in Boyarchar, according to Officer-in-Charge of Bhasan Char Police Station, Kutub Uddin. He stated that shortly after the vessel left Bhasan Char, it sank near its destination. Residents responded quickly with two additional trawlers and managed to pull survivors from the water.

While confirming the incident, Hatiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge AKM Azmal Huda said that 33 passengers had been rescued so far, with six still unaccounted for. Authorities have notified the Navy and Coast Guard, and search operations are ongoing.

Naval police official Uttam Saha noted that rough weather conditions have delayed the rescue efforts.
