Pakistan Train Hijack: 16 Militants Killed, 104 Hostages Rescued

Security forces in Pakistan have killed at least 16 militants and rescued 104 passengers following a train hijacking in Balochistan.
The Jaffar Express, carrying around 400 passengers, was en route from Quetta to Peshawar when armed militants intercepted it in a tunnel near Gudalar and Piru Kunri on Tuesday afternoon.
The attackers, linked to the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), took control of the train, prompting an immediate response from security personnel.
The ongoing operation has seen intense gun battles as forces continue efforts to free the remaining hostages, reports PTI.
Reports indicate that some passengers were taken into the mountains, with security forces pursuing the militants in the dark.
Authorities have confirmed that among those rescued, 58 were men, 31 women, and 15 children.
The freed passengers were transported to Mach, a town in Balochistan's Kachhi district, via another train.
Security forces have surrounded the tunnel area, preventing the militants from escaping, and remain focused on securing the release of all remaining hostages.
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind stated that troops reached the remote, mountainous area soon after railway officials reported the hijacking.
Gunfire and explosions have been reported in the vicinity as operations continue.
District police officer Rana Muhammad Dilawar confirmed that government officials were among the passengers but refuted claims by the BLA that security personnel had been taken hostage.
Emergency Response and Previous Attacks
Pakistan Railways has set up emergency desks at Peshawar and Quetta railway stations to assist worried families seeking updates on their loved ones.
Officials have urged the public to avoid misinformation spreading on social media.
The attack comes shortly after Pakistan Railways resumed services between Quetta and Peshawar following a suspension lasting over a month.
The region has seen similar incidents in the past—last November, a suicide bombing at Quetta railway station claimed 26 lives and injured 62, leading to service suspensions.
