North Korea is set to launch a new beach resort in Wonsan, with hopes it will attract a tourism boom.
According to state-run media, the Wonsan Kalma resort—located on the country's east coast—will begin receiving domestic visitors on July 1. The project has taken several years longer than expected to complete, and no date has been confirmed for foreign tourist access.
The resort is said to feature hotels, shops, restaurants, a water park, and stretches across 4 kilometers of beachfront. Authorities claim it can host up to 20,000 guests, though these figures are difficult to verify due to the nation's closed nature.
Wonsan holds personal significance for leader Kim Jong Un, who spent part of his youth in the area. He has long pushed to develop the city—once known more for missile tests—into a leisure destination for both locals and potential future tourists.
