Myanmar Coup Leader Min Aung Hlaing to Assume Presidency Amidst Nationwide Civil War

Myanmar Coup Leader Min Aung Hlaing to Assume Presidency Amidst Nationwide Civil War

NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar — Five years after seizing power in a violent military coup, General Min Aung Hlaing is set to be inaugurated as the President of Myanmar. The transition follows a highly controlled electoral process that critics have labeled a "coronation" rather than a democratic transition to civilian rule.

The Path to a "Preordained" Presidency

The move comes as the newly-formed parliament, dominated by military loyalists and the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), sits for the first time since the 2021 takeover. Under the current constitution, Min Aung Hlaing was required to step down as the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces to eligible for the presidency.

To maintain his grip on the military, he has appointed a staunch ally, General Ye Win Oo, to lead the armed forces. Furthermore, a new consultative council has been established to ensure Min Aung Hlaing retains paramount authority over both civilian and military sectors, effectively neutralizing any loss of power from removing his uniform.

A Nation in Crisis: Five Years of Conflict

The 2021 coup, which overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, triggered a brutal civil war that continues to devastate the country. The military's "four cuts" strategy—designed to isolate insurgent groups by devastating supporting communities—has led to:

    • Mass Displacement: Nearly 4 million people have been forced from their homes.

    • Casualties: Thousands have been killed in indiscriminate air strikes on schools, hospitals, and villages.

    • Economic Ruin: Hyperinflation and severe fuel shortages have collapsed living standards for millions.

United Nations estimates suggest that over 16 million people in Myanmar now require urgent life-saving assistance. The situation is further exacerbated by global energy volatility caused by the ongoing war in the Middle East, as Myanmar relies on imports for 90% of its petroleum products.

    Resistance and the "Revolution"

The National Unity Government (NUG), representing the ousted democratic administration, has rejected the new government as entirely illegitimate. Despite the military regaining some ground with Russian and Chinese assistance, resistance groups still control approximately 90 towns across the country.

Activists like Kyaw Win (a pseudonym), who was recently released after years of imprisonment and torture, represent a generation that feels betrayed by the global community. "The conflict will remain largely unchanged," warns Su Mon, an analyst at ACLED. "The new military leadership is expected to continue scorched-earth campaigns to regain lost territory."

A Glimmer of Hope for Dialogue?

Amidst the stalemate, some veteran activists are calling for a middle ground. Mya Aye, a long-time political prisoner, has proposed a new council aimed at fostering dialogue between the junta and its opponents. He argues that the release of the 80-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi could be the only catalyst for a viable compromise.

However, with Min Aung Hlaing finally achieving his long-held ambition of the presidency, there are few signs that the military is ready to abandon its "constructive engagement" in national politics. For the people of Myanmar, the transition to "civilian rule" appears to be a change in title only, as the shadow of the military remains firmly over the nation.
