Musk Ends Role in Trump Administration After Policy Clash

Elon Musk has officially concluded his role as a special government advisor under President Donald Trump, signaling an end to a highly publicized partnership aimed at trimming government inefficiency.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk expressed gratitude to the former president and reiterated his belief in the mission of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), saying it would continue to influence government practices long after his departure.
“My term as a Special Government Employee has concluded,” Musk wrote. “I’m thankful to President Trump for the opportunity to help curb unnecessary spending. DOGE will continue to thrive and evolve into a guiding principle for efficient governance.”
Initially brought in to spearhead efforts against bureaucratic waste, Musk committed to dedicating one to two days per week to DOGE, a role he began shortly after Trump’s 2024 reelection.
Speaking during an April earnings call, Musk emphasized the need to remain vigilant: “We’ve made real progress, but unless we keep at it, the fraud and waste will come back in full force.”
However, tensions emerged in recent weeks over Trump’s flagship legislative proposal—a comprehensive spending bill touted as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
Musk, in a recent CBS News interview, expressed disapproval, stating the bill was at odds with the efficiency goals of DOGE.
“A bill can be big, or it can be beautiful—but rarely both,” Musk said during the interview, hinting at growing friction within the administration.
The controversial legislation includes aggressive tax cuts, tightened eligibility for Medicaid and food assistance programs, and a combined $195 billion in spending for defense and border security.
Musk, who had thrown his support behind Trump in July 2024 following an assassination attempt on the then-candidate, later pledged significant backing for a pro-Trump super PAC—reportedly donating $45 million per month to “America PAC.”
Following Trump’s election victory, Musk was tapped—alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy—to head the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency.
Musk frequently joked about his close ties to Trump, even referring to himself as the “First Buddy,” while Trump quipped that “Elon just won’t go home.”
Though the official partnership has ended, the legacy of Musk’s influence on Trump-era policy, particularly in shaping the DOGE initiative, is likely to remain a talking point as the 2025 legislative agenda unfolds.
