Middle East Ceasefire Shattered as Iran Launches Massive Missile Salvos at Israel

Middle East Ceasefire Shattered as Iran Launches Massive Missile Salvos at Israel

JERUSALEM — The fragile peace in the Middle East has collapsed after Iran launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles targeting northern Israel on Sunday, marking the first direct confrontation between the two nations since an April ceasefire agreement.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that the missile barrages signify "the beginning of a full week of continuous strikes". While air defense systems intercepted the majority of the incoming projectiles, the attack forced residents across northern Israel into bomb shelters before military officials gave the all-clear.

Retaliation and Fears of Regional Escalation

The military flare-up follows an Israeli airstrike earlier on Sunday that struck Hezbollah strongholds in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The strike, which caused severe damage to residential infrastructure and multiple casualties, drew a swift response from Tehran. Pro-government demonstrations quickly filled the streets of Tehran, with protesters waving Iranian and Hezbollah flags.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry defended the military action, stating its forces targeted military sites in response to "repeated violations" of the April 17 ceasefire by both Israel and the United States, including recent operations against Iranian naval assets. Tehran warned that any Israeli counterattack would trigger a "crushing and comprehensive response".

    Divergent Responses Within Israel

The attack has drawn furious reactions from Israeli political and military leadership:

    • The Military Front: Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, declared that the military is conducting rapid situational assessments and stands ready to "strike the enemy with determination as soon as the order is given".

    • The Defensive Position: IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin stated that Iran made a "grave mistake" and affirmed that air defense systems remain fully deployed across the country.

    • Political Fallout: Right-wing National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir took a harder line on social media, asserting that Tehran "must burn" following the strikes.

In response to the deteriorating security environment, Israeli defense authorities closed all vital border crossings into the Gaza Strip, including the Rafah and Kerem Shalom humanitarian aid corridors, citing necessary security protocols.

Trump Asserts Authority Over Diplomatic Path

The sudden escalation has created significant friction between Washington and Jerusalem, raising questions about the limits of American influence over its closest regional ally.

U.S. President Donald Trump pushed back heavily against the escalation, telling news outlets that he is "not happy" with Israel's decision to strike Beirut. In an interview with Axios, Trump stated he would personally contact Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to demand that Israel refrain from retaliating.

"Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike, and Iran had its strike. We don't need another one," Trump told Axios, emphasizing that a final diplomatic agreement with Iran is remarkably close. "I don’t want it to blow up because of what is happening now."

In a subsequent call with the Financial Times, Trump dismissed the idea that the strikes would derail ongoing negotiations, confidently asserting his leverage over the Israeli Prime Minister by stating, "He won’t have any choice... I call all the shots."

    International Calls for Restraint

The international community has viewed the developments with mounting alarm. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper issued an urgent plea for calm on social media, writing that a return to open warfare serves no one's interests. Cooper urged both Israel and Iran to exhibit immediate restraint and de-escalate to preserve global trade stability and salvage diplomatic paths toward a lasting settlement.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem announced it will remain closed on Monday, ordering all government personnel to shelter in place as the region braces for the next move.
