Mamdani Faces Backlash After First Veto Blocks Antisemitism Bill

Mamdani Faces Backlash After First Veto Blocks Antisemitism Bill

New York City, April 24, 2026 — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing mounting criticism after using his first mayoral veto to block a bipartisan bill designed to strengthen protections around educational institutions in response to rising antisemitism concerns.

The proposed legislation, Int. 175-B, aimed to require law enforcement agencies to develop safety strategies to prevent obstruction, intimidation, and potential violence near schools and other education-related venues, while maintaining the right to peaceful protest.

    Mayor Raises Constitutional Concerns

In his statement, Mamdani defended the veto by warning that the bill’s broad language could unintentionally restrict lawful demonstrations. He argued that the definition of “educational facilities” was too wide and could apply to locations such as museums and teaching hospitals.

He further noted that the legislation might impact various protest movements, including labor demonstrations, climate activism, and pro-Palestinian student actions, raising concerns about potential violations of constitutional rights.

    Strong Reactions From Political Opponents

The decision triggered sharp criticism from several political figures. Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo accused Mamdani of prioritizing political ideology over public safety, especially amid growing reports of antisemitic incidents.

Cuomo argued that the veto undermines efforts to ensure the safety of Jewish communities and criticized what he described as a broader pattern in the mayor’s policy decisions.

    City Council Defends the Bill

City Council Speaker Julie Menin had earlier positioned the bill as a critical part of a wider initiative to combat antisemitism across the city.

She cited police data showing that antisemitic incidents accounted for a significant share of reported hate crimes in recent years, emphasizing the need for stronger protective measures near schools and educational spaces.

    Advocacy Groups Voice Disappointment

The Simon Wiesenthal Center expressed concern over the veto, stating that the bill was intended to balance safety with the right to protest.

The organization urged the City Council to consider overriding the veto, stressing that protecting students from harassment and disruption should remain a priority.

    Possibility of Council Override

Under New York City law, the Council can override a mayoral veto with a two-thirds majority. The bill originally passed with 30 votes, meaning only three additional votes would be required to enact it despite the mayor’s objection.

    Balanced Approach Still in Question

While Mamdani approved a separate measure focusing on security at religious institutions, he maintained that the broader education-focused bill needs clearer definitions to avoid unintended restrictions on civil liberties.

The debate now shifts back to the City Council, where lawmakers must decide whether to push forward with an override or revise the legislation to address the mayor’s concerns.
