Rajshahi: Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman has filed a case over the brutal murder of his 16-year-old son, Taosif Rahman Sumon.
The judge signed the case documents on Friday afternoon before leaving for his ancestral home in Jamalpur with his son’s body. Rajpara Police Station later registered the case.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) spokesperson Gaziur Rahman confirmed the development, saying Judge Abdur Rahman himself filed the case as the complainant.
The lone accused is 34-year-old Limon Mia, who was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently receiving treatment under police custody. Once his treatment is complete, police say he will be produced before the court and sent to prison.
Limon, a former army soldier, hails from Bhabaniganj village in Fulchhari upazila of Gaibandha. He is the son of SM Solaiman Sheikh and previously served as an organising secretary of the Fulchhari Upazila unit of BNP. After being dismissed from the army in 2018, he reportedly became addicted to drugs. His marriage later collapsed.
Police said he had known the judge’s wife, Tasmin Nahar Luci (44), for some time and often took money from her on various excuses.
According to investigators, when Tasmin stopped giving him money, Limon began blackmailing her and issuing threats. Fearing for her safety, she filed a general diary on November 6 at Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet, where she was staying with her daughter at the time.
Judge Abdur Rahman moved to Rajshahi around a year ago as a Labour Court judge and was appointed Metropolitan Sessions Judge last month. He was living with his wife and their only son in a rented flat in the Dabtala area of the city.
Police said Limon arrived at the family’s residence around 2:30pm on Thursday. During the attack that followed, Taosif was fatally stabbed while Tasmin sustained serious injuries. Limon himself was injured during the scuffle. Residents of another flat rushed all three to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Taosif dead on arrival.
An autopsy was performed on Friday morning by Dr Kafil Uddin, head of the Department of Forensic Medicine, and Lecturer Sharmin Sobhan Kaberi. After the post-mortem, Judge Abdur Rahman entered the morgue to see his son one last time and broke down in tears.
Dr Kafil Uddin later stated that Taosif had suffered stab injuries to his right thigh, leg, and arm, which severed major blood vessels and caused massive bleeding leading to his death.
The police report also noted a bruise on the victim’s neck. When questioned, the forensic expert said it may have resulted from attempted suffocation using a soft cloth, but clarified that the stab wounds were the primary cause of death. He added that both injuries occurred simultaneously.
Taosif was a ninth-grade student at Rajshahi Government Laboratory School.
