Ishaq Dar’s Strategic Beijing Dash: Pakistan and China Align to Mediate U.S.-Iran Conflict

Ishaq Dar’s Strategic Beijing Dash: Pakistan and China Align to Mediate U.S.-Iran Conflict

Following a high-stakes quadrilateral summit with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, arrived in Beijing this Tuesday for a critical one-day working visit.

The visit, made at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, marks a significant acceleration in regional efforts to establish a ceasefire framework between the United States and Iran. Immediately following Dar's arrival, Beijing signaled its intent to "deepen cooperation" with Islamabad regarding the Iranian crisis.

    1. Strengthening the "All-Weather" Strategic Coordination

During a press conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning described Pakistan and China as "all-weather" strategic partners. She emphasized that the two foreign ministers are set to increase strategic communication and coordination to launch renewed efforts for regional peace.

"The foreign ministers of both countries will enhance strategic communication and coordination regarding the situation in Iran and will make fresh efforts to maintain peace," Mao Ning stated.

Diplomatic sources suggest the discussions in Beijing are focused on creating a structural framework and core principles for potential direct dialogue between Washington and Tehran.

    2. From Islamabad’s "Quad" to Beijing’s Diplomacy

Dar’s visit comes on the heels of a 100-minute quadrilateral meeting in Islamabad involving the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt. That meeting concluded with a unified call for de-escalation and the creation of a conducive environment for structured talks between the U.S. and Iran.

    Key Objectives of the Mission:

    • Restoring Maritime Trade: Foreign Minister Wang Yi previously noted that while peace talks are "not an easy task," such efforts are vital to restoring normal shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz.

    • Pakistan as the Mediator: China has officially endorsed Pakistan’s "constructive role" in mitigating Middle East tensions.

    • Hosting Direct Talks: Minister Dar recently hinted that Pakistan is actively preparing to host direct U.S.-Iran negotiations in Islamabad, moving beyond the current system of indirect message exchanges.

    3. Tehran Welcomes the "Active Diplomatic Initiative"

The diplomatic push has received a warm reception from Tehran. Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, lauded Islamabad’s "proactive diplomatic initiative," expressing appreciation for the goodwill shown by a "brotherly nation."

"I applaud the initiative and goodwill of our friend and brother, Pakistan, in its efforts to stop the aggression of the U.S. and Israel against Iran and to restore peace and stability to the region," the Ambassador remarked.

    4. Economic and Regional Stability at Stake

This visit is Ishaq Dar’s second official trip to Beijing this year, underscoring the urgency of the crisis. Beyond the immediate military conflict, both nations are deeply concerned about the economic fallout.

    • Energy Security: The war has severely disrupted global energy supplies, impacting both China’s industrial needs and Pakistan’s fragile economy.

    • CPEC Integrity: Regional instability threatens the long-term progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

By aligning with the "Quad" (Riyadh, Ankara, Cairo) and now securing the backing of Beijing, Pakistan has positioned itself at the absolute center of the mediation process. While Washington and Tehran are not yet in direct contact, officials confirm that indirect communication via message exchanges is ongoing, with Pakistan serving as the primary bridge.

    5. A Multi-Layered Peace Offensive

The "Islamabad-Beijing Axis" represents a powerful counterweight to the unilateral military actions seen over the past month. By combining the regional influence of major Muslim powers with the global diplomatic weight of China, Ishaq Dar is attempting to build a "firewall" against further escalation.

The coming days will reveal if this intense diplomatic shuttle—from the halls of Islamabad to the diplomatic quarters of Beijing—can finally bring the warring parties to the table and reopen the world’s most vital energy artery.
