Iran Responds to U.S. Peace Proposal; Trump Dismisses Terms as ‘Unacceptable’

Iran Responds to U.S. Peace Proposal; Trump Dismisses Terms as ‘Unacceptable’

WASHINGTON/ TEHRAN/ ISLAMABAD — May 11, 2026: The diplomatic deadlock in the Middle East tightened on Sunday as Iran formally submitted its response to a U.S.-led ceasefire proposal through Pakistani intermediaries.

Despite the high-stakes effort to curb ten weeks of devastating regional conflict, U.S. President Donald Trump swiftly rejected Tehran’s counter-terms, labeling the response "totally unacceptable."

    Diplomacy Meets Deadlock

According to Iranian state media, Tehran’s position focuses on securing a permanent end to hostilities on all fronts—including the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

While Washington’s original draft called for a cessation of war, the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and a significant rollback of Iran's nuclear program, Tehran has reportedly pushed back.

Sources indicate that while Iran offered to transfer portions of its highly enriched uranium stockpile to a third party, it remains firm on refusing to dismantle its nuclear infrastructure. President Trump, communicating via social media, accused the Iranian leadership of "playing games" and warned that the window for a diplomatic resolution is closing.

    Escalation in the Gulf

The fragility of the current situation was underscored by fresh violence in the Persian Gulf. Authorities in Qatar, the UAE, and Kuwait reported a series of drone incursions.

In one instance, a drone strike sparked a fire on a commercial vessel near the Qatari coast, an act Qatar’s Foreign Ministry condemned as a "dangerous escalation."

While no group has officially claimed responsibility, the UAE military confirmed it intercepted two drones, pointing the finger toward Iranian-backed actors.

    The Nuclear Standoff

The status of Iran’s enriched uranium remains a primary flashpoint. Reports suggest Iran currently holds over 440 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium—just a technical step away from weapons-grade material.

    • The Israeli Position: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the war cannot conclude until the threat of Iran’s nuclear capability is physically neutralized, hinting at possible direct intervention.

    • The Russian Alternative: President Vladimir Putin has reportedly reiterated an offer to take custody of Iran’s enriched uranium as part of a broader settlement.

    • Iranian Readiness: General Akrami Nia of the IRNA news agency announced that Iranian forces are on "full readiness" to defend nuclear storage sites against any infiltration or aerial assaults.

    Maritime Security and International Friction

Further complicating the crisis is a disagreement over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister warned that any French or British naval presence in the strait would be viewed as a violation of international law and met with a "decisive response."

In Kenya, French President Emmanuel Macron clarified that France does not intend to launch a solo military deployment. Instead, Paris is advocating for a collaborative international mission to restore safe shipping lanes once active hostilities subside.

As the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports continues and Tehran maintains its grip on global energy transit routes, the international community remains on edge, waiting to see if a middle ground can be found before the conflict expands further.
