Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Reportedly in Coma, Loses Leg; Issues First Statement
Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has released his first statement after reports emerged that he is seriously injured, possibly in a coma, and may have lost one or both legs following US–Israeli strikes that killed his father and other family members.
Mojtaba Khamenei’s Injuries: Coma and Amputation Reports
Sources claim Khamenei is receiving intensive care at a Tehran hospital, with some reporting that he has lost a leg and suffered internal injuries. Other reports suggest he sustained only minor injuries and is being protected in a highly secure location. The unusual method of delivering his first statement—through a news anchor rather than in person—has fueled speculation that he is largely a figurehead, with real power resting with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
First Statement: Vows Retaliation
In the televised statement, Khamenei vowed to avenge the deaths of his father and other victims of the strikes. “We will not refrain from avenging the blood of our martyrs,” he said. He highlighted attacks on the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school in Minab and warned that Iran would seek compensation from the US and Israel.
Calls for Action Abroad and Gulf Pressure
Khamenei’s message also signaled that Iran may activate allies and operatives abroad to retaliate against the West. He confirmed that pressure on Gulf Arab nations will continue, while stressing that US military targets remain primary objectives.
Family Losses Confirmed
The statement confirmed the deaths of Khamenei’s wife, a sister, his niece, and the husband of another sister. He described witnessing his father’s body after the attack, emphasizing his father’s “mountain of steadfastness” even in death.
Experts Highlight IRGC Influence
Analysts suggest that Khamenei’s physical incapacity may be why the IRGC is directing Iran’s messages. Khosro Isfahani, a Washington-based Iran expert, said, “It appears the IRGC is controlling the narrative, and Khamenei may not even be capable of issuing these lines himself.”
