Iran rejects Trump’s ‘maximalist’ plan as Trump warns of action within four days

Iran rejects Trump’s ‘maximalist’ plan as Trump warns of action within four days

The Middle East stands at a precarious crossroads this week as a high-stakes diplomatic gambit by the Trump administration to end the month-long war with Iran has suffered a major setback.

On Wednesday, Iranian state media and high-ranking officials formally rejected a 15-point U.S. peace proposal, labeling the terms “excessive” and “unreasonable.”

The rejection comes as both nations harden their military postures, with the Pentagon deploying elite ground troops and Tehran issuing a counter-ultimatum of five strict conditions.

    The 15-Point Peace Gambit

The U.S. proposal, delivered through Pakistani intermediaries, sought a comprehensive reset of Iran’s strategic capabilities.

While the full text remains classified, leaked details suggest a "surrender-style" framework. Washington demanded the total dismantling of Iran’s nuclear facilities, a complete cessation of support for regional proxies—including Hezbollah and the Hashed al-Shaabi—and strict limitations on ballistic missile ranges.

In exchange, the U.S. offered the lifting of crippling economic sanctions. However, the proposal was met with immediate derision in Tehran.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed the talk of negotiations as a "psychological operation," while military officials claimed Washington was merely "negotiating with itself."

    Iran’s Five-Point Counter-Ultimatum

Refusing to accept the U.S. framework, Tehran has pivoted, presenting its own set of demands that prioritize financial recovery and regional sovereignty. These five conditions include:

    1. End to Aggression: A total halt to all U.S. and Israeli military strikes and "assassinations."

    2. War Reparations: Guaranteed and clearly defined payments for damages to Iranian infrastructure.

    3. Regional Ceasefire: A conclusion to the war across all fronts, ensuring the safety of all "resistance groups."

    4. Strait of Hormuz Sovereignty: International recognition of Iran’s absolute authority over the strategic waterway.

    5. Security Guarantees: Concrete mechanisms to ensure the war is not reimposed on the Islamic Republic.

Iran warns regional country over alleged island plot

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, has issued a stern warning that Iran’s adversaries, backed by an unnamed regional country, may be preparing to seize one of Iran’s islands.

“All enemy movements are under the full surveillance of our armed forces. If they step out of line, all the vital infrastructure of that regional country will, without restriction, become the target of relentless attacks,” Ghalibaf said in a post on X.

    Military Escalation: Operation Epic Fury

Despite the diplomatic chatter, the kinetic war shows no signs of cooling. The Pentagon confirmed on Wednesday that elements of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st Brigade Combat Team are deploying to the Middle East.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has placed the U.S. defense industrial base on a "wartime footing," accelerating the production of THAAD interceptors and precision missiles.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a blunt warning, stating that "President Trump does not bluff" and that Iran has a dwindling four-day window to reach an agreement before the U.S. begins targeting Iran’s critical energy infrastructure.

    The Human and Economic Toll

The human cost of the conflict, dubbed "Operation Roaring Lion" by some regional actors, has been devastating.

The death toll has surpassed 4,500, with Iran suffering the heaviest losses. In Israel, emergency services reported treating over 1,700 people for physical injuries and anxiety since the hostilities began on February 28.

Economically, the war has triggered an "energy crunch" across Asia. With roughly 20% of the world’s oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, nations like India and Japan are feeling the strain.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump recently discussed the necessity of keeping the Strait open, as India relies on the route for nearly 40% of its crude imports. Currently, Brent crude is hovering around $100 per barrel, though market volatility remains extreme.

The Human Cost: CENTCOM Reports 290 Wounded

While the diplomatic standoff continues, the physical toll of Operation Epic Fury is mounting. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Wednesday that approximately 290 U.S. service members have been wounded since the conflict began on February 28.

According to Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins, the vast majority of these injuries were minor, with 255 troops already cleared to return to duty.

However, the report also confirmed that 13 U.S. service members have been killed in the war to date. On the Iranian side, the losses are significantly higher; human rights groups estimate the total death toll has surpassed 4,500, with Iran suffering the heaviest casualties among both its military leadership and civilian population.

Trump Issues Four-Day Ultimatum: Threatens to "Unleash Hell" if Talks Fail

The Trump administration has officially placed Tehran on a 96-hour countdown. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt delivered a blunt warning on Wednesday, stating that "President Trump does not bluff" and is prepared to "unleash hell" on Iranian infrastructure if a deal is not reached within the five-day window set earlier this week.

The U.S. has threatened to pivot its targeting toward Iran’s massive energy and power plants, a move designed to cripple the regime’s economic backbone.

Despite the threats, the White House maintains that peace is the preferred path, provided Iran accepts the reality of its current military disadvantage.

Massive U.S. Military Build-up: Over 50,000 Troops in Theater

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that the American military presence in the Middle East has swelled to more than 50,000 personnel.

This formidable force includes 200 combat aircraft and two carrier strike groups. The deployment is being further bolstered by the arrival of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st Brigade Combat Team, units specialized in rapid-response and sustained "full-spectrum" combat.

This build-up creates a "dual-track" scenario where Washington offers a 15-point peace plan while simultaneously preparing for an all-out offensive if diplomacy remains stalled.

Pakistan’s Mediation Hailed Amid Regional De-escalation Efforts

Pakistan has emerged as a critical diplomatic bridge, with its role being lauded by regional powers, including Qatar.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held a high-level call to emphasize the necessity of a peaceful settlement. Pakistan, which maintains unique ties with both Tehran and Washington, has offered to host formal ceasefire talks.

While Iran has used this channel to receive the U.S. proposal, it continues to label the terms as "maximalist," even as regional neighbors urge both sides to prioritize stability for the sake of the global energy market.

White House Under Domestic Pressure: Voters Wary of Rising Prices

Domestically, the Trump administration is facing mounting pressure as American voters express deep concern over the economic ripple effects of the war.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones has seen a four-week losing streak, driven largely by volatile energy costs and rising bond yields.

With Brent crude hovering around $100 per barrel, there is growing anxiety that a prolonged conflict will lead to higher interest rates and inflation.

As mid-term elections approach, the administration is balancing its "maximum pressure" military strategy against the urgent need to stabilize domestic markets.

Diplomatic Rescheduling: Trump Moves Beijing Visit to May

The intensifying conflict has forced a major shift in the U.S. diplomatic calendar. President Trump has rescheduled his high-profile visit to Beijing, now slated for May 14-15. The trip, originally intended to finalize trade discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, was postponed as the war in the Middle East took operational priority.

China, a major consumer of Iranian oil, has condemned the ongoing strikes and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, making the upcoming May summit a critical venue for discussing global trade and regional security.

    A Fractured Landscape

As the diplomatic deadline approaches, the region remains a mosaic of fire and smoke. Iranian drones have targeted fuel depots in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, while the Israeli Air Force has reportedly dropped over 15,000 munitions on Iranian targets, including a naval research center in Isfahan.

For now, the "15 points" of Washington and the "5 conditions" of Tehran remain parallel lines that show no sign of converging. With U.S.

House Speaker Mike Johnson suggesting the war is "wrapping up," and Tehran warning of "relentless attacks" if its islands are seized, the coming 96 hours will likely determine if the region finds a path to peace or descends into a far deeper conflagration.
