Iran Launches Missiles, UAE Intercepts as Hormuz Tensions Deepen
DUBAI/WASHINGTON — Tensions in the Middle East rose sharply after the United Arab Emirates said it intercepted a wave of missiles and drones allegedly launched by Iran, while a fire was reported at an oil facility in Fujairah.
According to the UAE’s defence ministry, air defence systems shot down 15 incoming threats, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones. Authorities said the situation is under control, though the cause of the fire at the oil site remains under investigation. Iran has not issued any official statement on the incident.
Conflicting Claims at Sea
Tensions are also rising in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. Iranian state media claimed that missiles struck a US naval vessel after it ignored warnings. However, the US military denied this, stating that no ships were hit.
US President Donald Trump announced a naval mission called “Project Freedom” to escort commercial ships through the area and ensure safe passage.
Rising Threats and Strong Warnings
Trump warned that any confirmed attack on US forces would bring a strong response, while indicating that the current ceasefire has not officially collapsed.
Experts say the situation is highly unstable, with rising risks even though a full-scale war has not yet begun.
Global Reaction
International leaders quickly reacted. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the reported strikes, calling them a violation of international law. Gulf countries also expressed support for the UAE.
The Gulf Cooperation Council urged global powers to act to prevent further escalation.
Energy Concerns Grow
Concerns are increasing about possible disruption to global oil supply. Turkey’s energy minister warned that the crisis could continue for a long time, especially due to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
Wider Regional Situation
The situation comes as Israel continues military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, adding further pressure to an already tense region.
Precautionary Steps in UAE
As a safety measure, the UAE has moved all schools to online classes until further notice, aiming to protect students and staff.
