Indonesia: Rescue efforts in Indonesia are intensifying as emergency teams continue to search for more than 400 people still unaccounted for after a week of relentless cyclonic rainfall triggered deadly floods and landslides across Sumatra. 

Authorities say the confirmed death toll has now surpassed 440, with fears that many more victims remain buried beneath mud and debris.

Relief operations are underway, with emergency supplies being airlifted and shipped to affected areas. However, several communities remain cut off as damaged roads and submerged routes prevent access. In some isolated regions, survivors have reportedly broken into shops in desperate attempts to secure food and clean water.

The catastrophe is part of a larger regional weather emergency. Heavy monsoon storms and flooding this month have impacted Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka, contributing to more than 900 deaths across South and Southeast Asia.

Cyclone Senyar’s Trail of Destruction

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency reports that Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra are among the worst-hit areas after the rare tropical system Cyclone Senyar unleashed landslides and submerged thousands of homes. 

Agency chief Suharyanto said Central Tapanuli and Sibolga districts are still completely isolated, though naval ships carrying aid are expected to reach Sibolga soon. Malaysia has already dispatched medical teams to assist Aceh.

In Sungai Nyalo, around 100 km from Padang, floodwaters gradually receded over the weekend, revealing a landscape buried under thick layers of mud. 

Villagers say roads remain impassable, preventing aid workers from reaching them. “People stayed back because they didn’t want to abandon their homes,” a resident explained.

Police have confirmed reports of looting in parts of Sumatra before relief supplies arrived. 

Spokesperson Ferry Walintukan said officers are now deployed to restore order. 

Meanwhile, Elon Musk announced that his company will provide free Starlink satellite connectivity to help restore emergency communication systems.

Regional Crisis Worsens

Across the region, the impact is severe:

• Thailand has recorded at least 170 deaths from recent floods.

• Malaysia also reports casualties and severe damage.

• Sri Lanka has lost more than 330 people to floods and mudslides, with parts of Colombo submerged and central districts still cut off.

The Philippines, meanwhile, is facing both a natural disaster and a political storm. Floods have killed over 200 people, igniting massive anti-government protests in Manila. Demonstrators allege that corruption siphoned off funds meant for flood protection, worsening the crisis.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has denied wrongdoing but has already removed several officials amid public anger. His sister, Senator Imee Marcos, has joined the opposition, while Vice-President Sara Duterte has signaled readiness to take over if the president loses power—although she too is entangled in corruption allegations.

With protests swelling and allies defecting, Marcos now faces one of the most serious political challenges of his presidency, reviving comparisons to two former Philippine leaders—including his father—who were forced from office during public uprisings.

ইন্দোনেশিয়ার দুর্যোগ ব্যবস্থাপনা সংস্থা জানায়, বিরল এই ক্রান্তীয় ঘূর্ণিঝড় সাইক্লোন সেনিয়ার ব্যাপক ভূমিধস ও হাজার হাজার স্থাপনা ডুবিয়ে দিয়েছে। আচেহ, উত্তর সুমাত্রা ও পশ্চিম সুমাত্রা সবচেয়ে বেশি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত।

সংস্থার প্রধান সুহারিয়ান্তো জানান, সেন্ট্রাল তাপানুলি ও সিবোলগা এখনো সম্পূর্ণ বিচ্ছিন্ন। তবে দ্রুতই নৌবাহিনীর জাহাজ ত্রাণ নিয়ে সিবোলগায় পৌঁছাবে। ইতোমধ্যে মালয়েশিয়া আচেহ প্রদেশে চিকিৎসা সহায়তা পাঠিয়েছে।
