India Resumes Direct Diplomacy with Iran and Issues Emergency Helplines for Citizens

India Resumes Direct Diplomacy with Iran and Issues Emergency Helplines for Citizens

India has initiated direct diplomatic contact with Iran five days after the death of Ali Khamenei, signaling cautious engagement amid escalating tensions in West Asia.

India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar spoke over the phone with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi and met Iranian diplomatic officials. During the visit, India expressed condolences over Khamenei’s death by signing a condolence message.

The Indian government had maintained limited direct communication with Tehran since the announcement of Khamenei’s death, although New Delhi had earlier issued general statements regarding the broader West Asian situation. Jaishankar also held separate discussions with the foreign minister of Oman during the same period, reflecting India’s continuing diplomatic outreach in the Gulf region.

The death of Khamenei occurred amid intense military activity involving United States and Israel, which have been conducting operations in parts of Iran and its surrounding areas, according to regional reports. Following the incident, Iran responded with attacks targeting several American military installations across the region, while drones allegedly linked to Iran reportedly struck locations in countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, raising concerns about wider regional instability.

Tensions have further intensified as Israel continues airstrikes against Iran-aligned groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon. Meanwhile, reports also suggested that a missile strike allegedly sank an Iranian naval vessel in the Indian Ocean, though details about the incident remain disputed among defence sources.

The United States administration under Donald Trump has indicated that military pressure on Iran may continue, with no immediate expectation of a ceasefire. Analysts believe the ongoing conflict could further disrupt global energy supply chains and increase geopolitical risks in the Middle East.

In response to the regional uncertainty, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has established a dedicated control room to assist citizens and monitor the West Asian situation. The control room operates from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Indian nationals can contact the toll-free number 1800118797 or reach emergency diplomatic assistance through 1123012113, 1123014104, and 1123017905. The ministry has also released emergency contact numbers for Indian embassies in affected countries.

Diplomatic observers say India’s engagement with Iran at this stage reflects New Delhi’s attempt to balance its relations with regional powers while avoiding open criticism of any party involved in the conflict.

Many analysts believe India’s approach aims to protect its strategic and economic interests in the Gulf while maintaining neutrality in the escalating confrontation.
