High-Ranking Russian General Targeted in Moscow Shooting: What We Know

Feb 6, 2026:  A high-ranking Russian military official, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, was targeted in a shooting early Friday morning in Moscow.

The incident marks the latest in a series of attacks on senior military figures within Russia since the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine nearly four years ago.

According to official reports, the shooting occurred at a residential complex in the northwest district of the capital. General Alekseyev was struck multiple times and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

While authorities have confirmed he is receiving treatment, his current medical condition remains undisclosed.

Who is Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev?

General Alekseyev is a prominent figure within the Russian military hierarchy, known for his strategic roles in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

    • Diplomatic Role: He was a key participant in negotiations with Ukraine following the Russian takeover of Mariupol in 2022.

    • The Wagner Mutiny: In June 2023, Alekseyev was tasked with negotiating with Yevgeny Prigozhin during the brief armed rebellion led by the Wagner Group.

    • Sanctions: Due to his high-level involvement in military operations, he is currently under European Union sanctions.

    Investigation and Recent Precedents

Svetlana Petrenko, a spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, confirmed that a criminal case for attempted murder has been opened.

While the attackers remain unidentified, the incident follows a pattern of targeted strikes against Russian officials.

Feb 2026Lt. Gen. Vladimir AlekseyevHospitalized after shooting in Moscow.

"The Investigative Committee is exploring all leads, including potential involvement by foreign intelligence services," a source close to the investigation noted.

Ukrainian intelligence (SBU) has previously claimed responsibility for several successful operations against Russian military personnel on Russian soil, though they have not yet commented on Friday's shooting.

    Security Concerns in the Capital

The attack on the Volokolamsk Highway—a busy residential and transit area—highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Moscow.

Despite increased surveillance and crackdowns by the FSB, high-profile military figures remain vulnerable to localized strikes.
