From Underground Rap to State Power: Balendra Shah Sworn In as Nepal’s Prime Minister
In a historic shift for the Himalayan nation, Balendra Shah—the 35-year-old structural engineer and hip-hop icon known to millions as "Balen"—was officially sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal on Friday.
His ascent follows a landslide victory for the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in the March 5 general elections, a result that has effectively dismantled the decades-long grip of Nepal’s traditional political elite.
A Mandate Born of Unrest
Shah’s rise to the pinnacle of Nepali politics is inextricably linked to the "Youth Revolution" of September 2025. Those protests, which claimed 77 lives, began as a movement against a social media ban but quickly evolved into a national uprising against systemic corruption, unemployment, and economic stagnation.
During the unrest, Shah’s anthem "Nepal Haseko" (Smiling Nepal) became the soundtrack of the resistance. On the eve of his inauguration, he released a new track that garnered over two million views in hours, rapping: "Undivided Nepali, this time history is being made."
From the "Battle Ground" to the Prime Minister’s Office
Balen Shah’s journey to power is as unconventional as his signature black sunglasses and blazer:
2013: Shot to fame by winning a televised rap battle, using "slam poetry" style lyrics to critique social inequality.
2022: Shocked the establishment by winning the Kathmandu Mayoral race as an independent candidate.
2026: Led the RSP to a decisive victory, personally unseating veteran leader and former PM KP Sharma Oli in his long-time stronghold of Jhapa 5.
The New Government’s Agenda: 1.2 Million Jobs
The RSP platform, which resonated deeply with voters under 40, centers on a sweeping "Anti-Establishment" manifesto. Prime Minister Shah has pledged to:
Job Creation: Generate 1.2 million new positions to curb the mass migration of Nepali youth seeking work in the Middle East.
Anti-Corruption: Implement aggressive judiciary reforms to prosecute "untouchable" political figures.
Governance: Shift toward a results-oriented, technocratic administration.
Controversy and The Road Ahead
Despite the euphoria surrounding his inauguration, Shah faces immediate and daunting challenges. Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, have expressed concerns regarding his "heavy-handed" tactics during his tenure as Mayor, where he used police to clear street vendors and bulldoze unauthorized structures.
Furthermore, the new administration must decide how to handle the findings of the 2025 Uprising Commission. The commission recently recommended the prosecution of former PM KP Sharma Oli for his role in the deadly crackdown on protesters last year.
International Context: Shah takes the helm at a time of global instability. With millions of Nepalis working in the volatile Middle East and a domestic economy struggling with inflation, the "Rapper PM" will have little time for a honeymoon period.
