FBI Probes Former Counterterrorism Chief Joe Kent Over Alleged Classified Leaks

FBI Probes Former Counterterrorism Chief Joe Kent Over Alleged Classified Leaks

A former senior US counterterrorism official is now under federal investigation over allegations of leaking classified information, according to media reports.

Sources familiar with the matter told CBS News that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been investigating Joe Kent, who recently stepped down as director of the National Counterterrorism Center. The inquiry reportedly began prior to his resignation earlier this week.

Resignation Linked to Iran Policy Dispute

Kent, a longtime supporter of Donald Trump and a decorated US military veteran, announced his resignation citing disagreement with the administration’s stance on the Iran conflict. In his resignation letter, he stated that he could not back the war “in good conscience,” arguing that Iran did not pose an immediate threat to the United States—a claim rejected by the White House.

CBS News: Probe Handled by FBI Criminal Division

According to CBS News, the investigation is being handled by the FBI’s criminal division and has been ongoing for some time. The report also cited officials who alleged that Kent had previously been linked to unauthorized disclosures, although specific details have not been publicly disclosed.

    Allegations of Undermining Leadership

Following Kent’s departure, former White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich accused him of being frequently associated with national security leaks and attempting to undermine the chain of command. However, no concrete evidence was provided to support these claims.

    Controversial Remarks Draw Criticism

In his resignation communication, Kent further argued that the Iran conflict was influenced by external pressures, including from Israel and pro-Israel lobbying groups in the United States. The Anti-Defamation League strongly criticized these remarks, stating that such claims echoed harmful and longstanding antisemitic narratives.

    White House and Trump Respond

The White House dismissed Kent’s assertions, maintaining that there was compelling intelligence supporting its position. President Trump later commented publicly, describing Kent as a “nice guy” but saying it was ultimately “a good thing” that he had left his post, while also criticizing his stance on national security.

    Background: Appointment and Role

Kent had been appointed earlier in Trump’s administration and was confirmed to lead the National Counterterrorism Center in July 2025.
