RAJSHAHI, Feb 7: The three-story residence of former State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam in Chalksinga, Arani Municipality, was set on fire on Thursday noon by an agitated mob.
Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of motorbike-riding individuals from Bagha Upazila Sadar and Charghat stormed the house, detonated crude bombs, and set it ablaze.
Thick smoke continued to rise from the building until 2:00 PM, with no sign of fire service intervention.
Shahriar Alam, who served as MP for Rajshahi-6 (Charghat-Bagha) since 2008 and held the state minister post for two terms, has gone into hiding following the fall of the AL government.
The attack on Shahriar Alam’s residence is believed to be linked to ongoing political unrest following the recent change in government. Locals say tensions had been building in the area, with reports of clashes and demonstrations. "People were angry about years of political influence and unresolved grievances," said a resident who witnessed the incident but preferred anonymity.
