Deadly Shootout Near Israeli Consulate in Istanbul; Three Attackers Killed
A violent gun battle erupted Tuesday afternoon in Istanbul’s high-security Beşiktaş district, leaving three assailants dead and two police officers wounded. The exchange of fire took place in the immediate vicinity of the building housing the Israeli Consulate, a facility that has reportedly been vacant for two years.
The Assault in Beşiktaş
According to Turkish broadcasters NTV and CNN Türk, the incident began when gunmen armed with long-barreled weapons opened fire near the diplomatic mission. Turkish security forces, who maintain a permanent and heavy presence in the area, immediately returned fire.
Witness footage captured by Reuters showed the chaotic scene as police officers took cover behind vehicles while the sound of rapid gunfire echoed through the streets. Images from the aftermath showed at least one individual on the pavement covered in blood as medical teams rushed to the site.
Casualties and Investigation
Turkish authorities confirmed that three individuals—identified as the attackers—were fatally shot by police during the skirmish. Two police officers sustained injuries in the line of duty and were transported to a nearby hospital; their conditions have not yet been disclosed.
Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that three senior investigators have been assigned to lead a "multifaceted and meticulous" probe into the incident. While Gürlek confirmed the shootout occurred outside the consulate, he refrained from immediately labeling the attack as antisemitic or politically motivated.
A Symbolic Target?
The motive behind the assault remains under intense scrutiny. A representative of the local Jewish community informed The Jerusalem Post that the consulate has been closed and unstaffed since 2024, raising questions about whether the gunmen intended to strike a symbolic target or were specifically engaging the security forces stationed at the perimeter.
This attack comes amid heightened regional tensions and a surge in diplomatic friction across the Middle East. Security has been bolstered at all foreign missions across Turkey as investigators work to determine if the assailants were affiliated with any larger extremist networks.
