India: The authorities in India’s northeastern state of Manipur have imposed a curfew and suspended internet services across several districts following intense public unrest triggered by the arrest of a leader from the Meitei community.
A government order confirmed that internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN connections, were suspended in five districts beginning late last night at 11:45 PM. The restrictions will remain in effect for five days.
The Bishnupur district is currently under full curfew, while Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching districts are facing both internet blackouts and prohibitory orders, as per an official directive issued by N Ashok Kumar, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home).
The state government cited concerns that social media platforms could be misused by anti-social elements to spread inflammatory content such as hate speech or provocative videos, potentially worsening tensions and disrupting public order.
In protest against the arrest, demonstrators set fire to tyres and furniture at key intersections in Kwakeithel and Uripok, causing traffic blockades and raising tensions.
The arrested individual is reportedly affiliated with Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei organization.
"Security forces have been reinforced in sensitive areas to manage the situation and prevent further escalation," a senior official stated.
Manipur has remained tense amid a prolonged ethnic conflict between the majority Meitei and minority Kuki-Zo communities.
The unrest, which has persisted for over two years, has resulted in nearly 200 fatalities and left around 50,000 people displaced.
