China Promises Strong Response After CIA Recruitment Video Targets PLA Officers
Feb 14, 2026: China has vowed to take all necessary measures to counter foreign espionage following the release of a Chinese-language recruitment video by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) aimed at officers in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Beijing condemned the video as a political provocation and an attempt to undermine Chinese national security.
The CIA video, posted on its YouTube channel, depicts a fictional Chinese military officer deciding to contact the agency to expose leadership misconduct. It encourages Chinese officers to report information on the country’s leaders and armed forces, sparking a sharp response from Beijing.
Beijing Condemns CIA Effort
At a press briefing on Friday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the country will resolutely combat infiltration and sabotage by foreign “anti-China forces” and protect its sovereignty, security, and development interests. He did not elaborate on the specific measures China might take.
“China will take all necessary measures to resolutely combat infiltration and sabotage activities of foreign anti-China forces and resolutely safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests,” Lin said.
Details of the CIA Recruitment Video
The video portrays a fictional Chinese officer reflecting on perceived misconduct by military leaders. The officer concludes that “the only thing leaders are protecting is their own interest” and that their authority “is based on countless lies.”
The clip shows the officer interacting with his family at home, passing a checkpoint in heavy rain, and finally using a laptop in his car while expressing his decision: “Picking this path is my way of fighting for my family and my country.”
The US intelligence agency did not comment on China’s response to the video. Analysts suggest the video is part of broader CIA efforts to reach individuals within closed military systems and gather intelligence on Chinese leadership and defense operations.
Rising Tensions Over Espionage
This incident comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and China over cybersecurity, trade, and military operations. Both nations have increasingly accused each other of espionage and interference, raising concerns about the stability of bilateral relations.
China’s pledge to counter the recruitment video signals that Beijing may take further steps to strengthen internal security and monitor potential leaks within the PLA.
