An offshore earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck the northern region of the Philippines on Tuesday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tremor hit at 10:38 am local time, centered roughly 29 kilometers northwest of Pasuquin town in Ilocos Norte. It occurred at a depth of 27 kilometers beneath the seabed.
Phivolcs confirmed the quake was tectonic in origin and may be followed by aftershocks, although it is not expected to cause serious damage.
Residents in surrounding provinces, including Cagayan, Ilocos Sur, Isabela, and Abra, also reported feeling the ground shake.
Situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines frequently experiences seismic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates in the region.
