US President Donald Trump has signalled that his administration may impose new tariffs on agricultural goods from India, particularly rice, as well as fertiliser shipments from Canada, citing stalled negotiations and the need to protect American farmers.
His comments came during an event at the White House where he announced a multi-billion-dollar relief programme designed to ease financial pressure on US farmers.
While unveiling the support package, Trump intensified his criticism of foreign agricultural imports, arguing that low-priced products from India and other Asian suppliers were harming local producers.
He said the government would channel "$12 billion in economic assistance to American farmers", funded through the tariff revenues collected from other nations.
"We're really taking in trillions of dollars, if you think about it," Trump said, insisting that foreign competitors “took advantage of us like nobody's ever seen.”
He portrayed the new support measures as vital for stabilising the agricultural economy, which he said had been weakened by inflation and prolonged low commodity prices. Describing farmers as a cornerstone of the national economy, he emphasised that tariffs were a key tool in his effort to restore strength to the US farm sector.
India came up repeatedly in a discussion on imported rice, particularly after a rice grower from Louisiana described the impact of Indian rice brands on southern producers. When informed that Indian companies controlled “the two largest brands” in US retail rice sales, Trump responded: “All right, and we'll take care of it. That's great. It's so easy… Tariffs, again, solves the problem in two minutes.”
"They shouldn't be dumping... I mean, I heard that, I heard that from others. You can't do that," he added.
Trump also hinted at new duties on imported fertiliser from Canada as part of an effort to boost domestic manufacturing. "A lot of it does come in from Canada, and so we'll end up putting very severe tariffs on that, if we have to, because that's the way you want to bolster here," he said. "And we can do it here. We can all do that here."
Agricultural trade between India and the United States has grown steadily over the past decade. India exports basmati, non-basmati rice, spices, and seafood to the US, while importing American almonds, cotton, and pulses.
Despite expanding commerce, the two countries continue to face disagreements over subsidies, market access, and WTO disputes—especially in sectors such as rice and sugar—posing challenges to ongoing trade negotiations.
