The official draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was held in Washington on Friday, with US President Donald Trump playing a major role in the high-profile ceremony that set the stage for the first-ever 48-team tournament.

Before the draw began at the Kennedy Center, FIFA President Gianni Infantino — known for his close ties with Trump — presented the US president with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize.

The award, FIFA said, honors individuals whose efforts inspire unity and hope for future generations. 

Trump described the recognition as “one of the greatest honors of my life.”

The 2026 World Cup, the most logistically ambitious in the competition’s history, will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. This edition introduces a historic expansion from 32 to 48 teams.

The glamorous draw ceremony was co-hosted by model Heidi Klum and American actor-comedian Kevin Hart, featuring performances from Robbie Williams, Andrea Bocelli, and the Village People. Sports icons including Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, and Shaquille O’Neal were also scheduled to participate in the proceedings.

Trump has made next year’s World Cup a central feature of both his second presidential term and the celebrations marking 250 years of US independence. 

However, he has stirred controversy by threatening to shift matches away from cities governed by Democrats if he considers them “unsafe,” claiming that Infantino would support such a move.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum participated directly in the draw, selecting pre-marked balls for their respective countries.

Trump selected the United States’ ball. Despite recent diplomatic tensions with both neighbors, Trump praised their “outstanding cooperation” in hosting the tournament.

The event also faced political tension after Iran announced a boycott because the United States denied visas to several members of its delegation. Ultimately, Iranian head coach Amir Ghalenoei was expected to attend the ceremony.

Of the 16 host venues, the United States will feature 11, while Mexico will have three and Canada two. Mexico City’s iconic Estadio Azteca will stage the opening match, and the final is scheduled for MetLife Stadium near New York City.

Argentina Begin Title Defense

Defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, enter the tournament as one of the top seeds. Messi, who will turn 39 during the competition, told ESPN this week that he hopes to take part, saying, “I’d love to be there.”

Argentina join Spain, Brazil, France, Germany, England, Portugal, Belgium, and the Netherlands among the top-seeded teams. The three host nations complete the first pot.

The expanded format opens doors for several debutant nations, including Cape Verde, Jordan, and Curacao. Despite criticism from some quarters, FIFA’s global football development chief Arsène Wenger maintained that the 48-team format represents a “natural evolution.”

Teams will be divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 32. For the first time, the four highest-ranked nations — Spain, Argentina, France, and England — cannot meet until the semifinals, provided each wins its group.

Six spots remain to be determined through playoffs, with former champions Italy among the potential wildcard threats after missing the past two World Cups.

Full match schedules and venues will be confirmed on Saturday, following the completion of the draw.
