Trump Orders Federal Ban on Anthropic AI in Escalating Defense Dispute

Trump Orders Federal Ban on Anthropic AI in Escalating Defense Dispute

US President Donald Trump has directed federal agencies to halt the use of artificial intelligence tools developed by Anthropic, escalating tensions between the White House and one of America’s leading AI firms.

In a post shared on Truth Social, President Trump announced that government departments would immediately begin phasing out Anthropic’s technology, stating that the administration would no longer conduct business with the company. The decision follows a dispute over the scope of military access to Anthropic’s AI systems.

    Disagreement Over Military Access

The conflict centers on Anthropic’s refusal to agree to what the Pentagon described as “any lawful use” of its AI tools by the Department of Defense. According to officials, the administration sought broader flexibility in deploying the company’s models across defense-related programs.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that Anthropic would be designated a “supply chain risk,” a classification that could restrict defense contractors from engaging in commercial activity with the company. If finalized, the move would mark the first time a US-based technology firm has received such a public designation.

Anthropic responded that it had not received formal notification regarding the label and signaled it would challenge any such action through legal channels. The company has previously expressed concerns about potential uses of AI in areas such as large-scale surveillance and autonomous weapons systems.

    Six-Month Phase-Out Plan

President Trump stated that Anthropic’s products will be removed from government operations within six months. The company’s AI assistant, Claude, has been used in certain government and classified environments since 2024, making Anthropic one of the earliest advanced AI providers to work directly with federal agencies.

Anthropic indicated it would cooperate in ensuring a smooth transition if defense officials choose to migrate to another provider.

    Industry Implications

The standoff has drawn attention across the AI sector. Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s chief executive and a former executive at OpenAI, has maintained the company’s position on setting limits around certain applications of advanced AI.

Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that his company also maintains internal “red lines” regarding military deployments, while confirming that OpenAI has secured agreements to provide AI tools within classified cloud environments for defense purposes.

The disagreement highlights the broader debate over how rapidly evolving AI technologies should be integrated into national security operations. With Anthropic’s reported $200 million defense contract and a recent valuation of $380 billion, the outcome could shape how private AI developers structure future partnerships with government agencies.

As negotiations continue, the technology and defense sectors will be closely watching how this high-profile policy dispute influences the next chapter of AI governance in the United States.
