Google Pay, Google's digital payment platform, is being officially launched in Bangladesh for the first time today.
Dr Ahsan H Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, will inaugurate the service formally today (Tuesday, June 24) at a hotel in the capital city.
City Bank has partnered with the technology giant Google to introduce this service. International card brands Mastercard and Visa are collaborating as partners. City Bank is the first bank in the country to be directly connected with Google Pay.
With the launch of Google Pay, customers in Bangladesh will be able to make transactions more easily, quickly, and securely using the Google Pay app on their smartphones. Payments can be made by simply tapping the phone on any point-of-sale (POS) terminal, both domestically and internationally. This eliminates the need to carry plastic cards separately. Google will not charge any fees for these transactions.
Initially, this service will be available only to City Bank customers who hold Mastercard or Visa cards. Customers must have an Android smartphone and download the Google Pay app from the Play Store. They then need to link their City Bank card information within the app. Once linked, users can make payments easily by tapping their phone at any store or restaurant equipped with a POS terminal.
