Tesla Model Y Retains Lead as Europe’s Most Popular EV
In 2025, the Tesla Model Y maintained its dominance in the European electric vehicle market despite facing production challenges and growing competition. With 149,805 registrations, the Model Y outsold all competitors, solidifying its position as Europe’s most popular EV.
Even as the European electric vehicle market saw a 28% overall decline in registrations, Tesla’s Model Y continued to attract buyers, demonstrating strong brand loyalty and demand for the model.
Competition and Market Dynamics
The Tesla Model Y outpaced its nearest rival, the Skoda Elroq, by more than 50,000 units, while the Tesla Model 3 registered 85,393 units, showing a year-over-year decline. The Renault 5 followed closely with 85,101 registrations. Other notable EVs gaining traction included Volkswagen’s ID.4, ID.3, ID.7, BMW iX1, and Kia EV3.
Despite anti-Elon Musk sentiments in some European countries, mainly linked to his U.S. political associations, the Model Y’s popularity remained largely unaffected, highlighting its widespread consumer appeal.
Volkswagen Surpasses Tesla in Overall EV Deliveries
While Tesla dominated as an individual model, Volkswagen emerged as Europe’s leading electric vehicle brand in 2025, delivering 274,278 EVs, a 56% increase from the previous year. The Volkswagen ID.7 significantly contributed to this growth, helping the brand expand its footprint amid increasing competition from both traditional European manufacturers and rising Chinese EV brands.
In contrast, Tesla’s total EV deliveries in Europe reached 236,357 units, marking a 27% decline, attributed by analysts to Tesla’s aging lineup and the temporary production transition to the updated Model Y.
Conclusion: Tesla’s Future in Europe
Despite a challenging market environment, the Tesla Model Y’s strong sales highlight its resilience and continued relevance in the European EV sector. As competition intensifies and new models enter the market, Tesla faces a crucial period of adaptation to sustain its leadership position.
