6 Bangladeshi Peacekeepers Killed in Militant Attack in Sudan- সুদানে সন্ত্রাসী হামলায় ছয় বাংলাদেশি শান্তিরক্ষী নিহত, সংঘর্ষ চলমান

Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers have been killed in a militant attack on a United Nations base in Sudan, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of Bangladesh.

ISPR said the attack took place in the Abyei area, where armed militants targeted a UN camp. Alongside the fatalities, eight Bangladeshi soldiers were injured. Armed clashes between peacekeepers and attackers were still ongoing at the time of reporting.

Chief Adviser Expresses Deep Condolences

Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed profound sorrow and concern over the loss of lives. In a statement released late Saturday, he said he was deeply saddened by the martyrdom of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and the injury of eight others while they were carrying out their duty to uphold peace and stability.

He described Bangladesh’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions as globally recognised, noting that the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers was both a source of national pride and deep grief. The Chief Adviser offered prayers for the departed souls and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, while also wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded.

He further stated that Bangladesh had already urged the United Nations to ensure the highest level of medical care and necessary support for the injured personnel. The government, he said, would stand beside the families of the peacekeepers during this difficult time.

Condemning the attack, Professor Yunus said assaults on peacekeepers constitute a grave crime against international peace and humanity. He called on the UN and the global community to take stronger measures to enhance the security of peacekeeping forces. The government, he added, would remain in close contact with the UN to ensure the swift repatriation of the bodies and proper treatment of the injured.

Drone Attack on UN Facility

AFP, citing hospital sources, reported that the UN facility in Kadugli, located in Sudan’s Kordofan region, was targeted in the attack, resulting in six deaths. Witnesses said the assault was carried out using drones.

Sudan’s army-backed government condemned the incident, blaming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group opposing the military. In a statement, the government described the attack as a dangerous escalation.

The Sudanese Sovereignty Council, led by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, also characterised the incident as a serious intensification of hostilities.

Strategic Importance of Kadugli

Kadugli has been under siege by the RSF for nearly a year and a half, and famine was declared in the city earlier this month. The Kordofan region, a vast agricultural zone divided into three states, lies between RSF-controlled Darfur in the west and areas held by the Sudanese army to the north, east and centre.

The city is considered strategically vital for maintaining supply routes and troop movements.

Since April 2023, the RSF has been engaged in intense fighting with Sudan’s military, deploying fighters, drones and allied militias across central Sudan. Analysts suggest the RSF aims to breach army defences in the region to pave the way for reclaiming Khartoum.

Allegations Against RSF

According to the BBC, the RSF was formed in 2013, largely from the Janjaweed militias accused of committing atrocities in Darfur. These groups have faced allegations of genocide and ethnic cleansing against non-Arab Black African communities.

Under the leadership of General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as Hemedti, the RSF evolved into a powerful paramilitary force. The group has reportedly been involved in conflicts in Yemen and Libya.

Dagalo is also accused of controlling gold mines in Sudan and smuggling gold to the United Arab Emirates. Sudan’s military has alleged that the UAE supports the RSF and has been linked to drone attacks—claims that the Gulf state has denied.

Additionally, Sudan’s army has accused eastern Libyan strongman General Khalifa Haftar of backing the RSF by facilitating arms smuggling and sending fighters, allegations that further underscore the regional dimensions of the conflict.

সুদানে জাতিসংঘের একটি ঘাঁটিতে সন্ত্রাসী হামলায় ছয়জন বাংলাদেশি শান্তিরক্ষী নিহত হয়েছেন। বাংলাদেশ আন্তঃবাহিনী জনসংযোগ পরিদপ্তর (আইএসপিআর) শনিবার এক বিবৃতিতে এ তথ্য জানিয়েছে।

আইএসপিআর জানায়, সুদানের আবেই এলাকায় জাতিসংঘের ক্যাম্প লক্ষ্য করে সশস্ত্র সন্ত্রাসীরা হামলা চালায়। এতে বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনীর ছয়জন শান্তিরক্ষী নিহত হন এবং আরও আটজন আহত হন। হামলাকারীদের সঙ্গে শান্তিরক্ষীদের সংঘর্ষ তখনো চলছিল।

প্রধান উপদেষ্টার গভীর শোক

এই ঘটনায় গভীর শোক ও উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছেন প্রধান উপদেষ্টা অধ্যাপক মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস। শনিবার রাতে দেওয়া এক বিবৃতিতে তিনি বলেন, শান্তি ও স্থিতিশীলতা প্রতিষ্ঠার দায়িত্ব পালনকালে ছয়জন বাংলাদেশি শান্তিরক্ষীর শাহাদাতবরণ এবং আটজনের আহত হওয়ার খবরে তিনি গভীরভাবে মর্মাহত।

তিনি বলেন, জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা কার্যক্রমে বাংলাদেশের অবদান আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে স্বীকৃত। নিহত শান্তিরক্ষীদের আত্মত্যাগ একদিকে জাতির গৌরব, অন্যদিকে গভীর বেদনার। তিনি নিহতদের আত্মার মাগফিরাত কামনা করেন এবং তাঁদের শোকসন্তপ্ত পরিবারগুলোর প্রতি গভীর সমবেদনা জানান। একই সঙ্গে আহতদের দ্রুত আরোগ্য কামনা করেন।

প্রধান উপদেষ্টা আরও বলেন, আহত শান্তিরক্ষীদের সর্বোচ্চ চিকিৎসা ও প্রয়োজনীয় সহায়তা নিশ্চিত করতে ইতোমধ্যে জাতিসংঘের প্রতি অনুরোধ জানানো হয়েছে। এই দুঃসময়ে সরকার শান্তিরক্ষীদের পরিবারগুলোর পাশে থাকবে।

সন্ত্রাসী হামলার তীব্র নিন্দা জানিয়ে তিনি বলেন, শান্তিরক্ষীদের ওপর হামলা আন্তর্জাতিক শান্তি ও মানবতার বিরুদ্ধে গুরুতর অপরাধ। শান্তিরক্ষীদের নিরাপত্তা জোরদারে জাতিসংঘ ও আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায়কে আরও কার্যকর পদক্ষেপ নেওয়ার আহ্বান জানান তিনি। নিহতদের মরদেহ দ্রুত দেশে ফিরিয়ে আনা এবং আহতদের সুচিকিৎসা নিশ্চিত করতে বাংলাদেশ সরকার জাতিসংঘের সঙ্গে ঘনিষ্ঠ যোগাযোগ বজায় রাখবে বলেও জানান তিনি।

ড্রোন দিয়ে হামলার অভিযোগ

বার্তা সংস্থা এএফপি হাসপাতাল সূত্রের বরাতে জানিয়েছে, সুদানের কোরদোফান অঞ্চলের কাদুগলি এলাকায় জাতিসংঘের একটি স্থাপনায় হামলা চালানো হয়, যাতে ছয়জন নিহত হন। প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীদের ভাষ্য অনুযায়ী, ড্রোন ব্যবহার করে এই হামলা চালানো হয়েছে।

সুদানের সেনা–সমর্থিত সরকার এই হামলার নিন্দা জানিয়ে সরকারবিরোধী আধা সামরিক বাহিনী র‌্যাপিড সাপোর্ট ফোর্সেস (আরএসএফ)-কে দায়ী করেছে। সরকারের বিবৃতিতে এ ঘটনাকে বিপজ্জনক উত্তেজনা বৃদ্ধির ঘটনা হিসেবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।

সেনাপ্রধান জেনারেল আবদেল ফাত্তাহ আল-বুরহানের নেতৃত্বাধীন সার্বভৌম পরিষদও এই হামলাকে সংঘাতের গুরুতর মাত্রা বৃদ্ধির ইঙ্গিত হিসেবে বর্ণনা করেছে।

কাদুগলির কৌশলগত গুরুত্ব

কাদুগলি শহরটি প্রায় দেড় বছর ধরে আরএসএফের অবরোধে রয়েছে এবং চলতি মাসের শুরুতে সেখানে দুর্ভিক্ষ ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে। কোরদোফান অঞ্চলটি একটি বিস্তৃত কৃষিভিত্তিক এলাকা, যা তিনটি রাজ্যে বিভক্ত। অঞ্চলটি পশ্চিমে আরএসএফ-নিয়ন্ত্রিত দারফুর এবং উত্তর, পূর্ব ও মধ্যাঞ্চলে সেনাবাহিনী-নিয়ন্ত্রিত এলাকার মাঝখানে অবস্থিত।

সরবরাহ লাইন বজায় রাখা ও সেনা চলাচলের জন্য কাদুগলির অবস্থান অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বলে মনে করা হয়।

২০২৩ সালের এপ্রিল থেকে আরএসএফ সুদানের সেনাবাহিনীর সঙ্গে তীব্র সংঘাতে জড়িত। তারা যোদ্ধা, ড্রোন এবং মিত্র মিলিশিয়া মোতায়েন করে মধ্য সুদানে সামরিক চাপ বাড়িয়েছে। বিশ্লেষকদের মতে, সেনাবাহিনীর প্রতিরক্ষা ভেদ করে রাজধানী খার্তুম পুনর্দখলের পথ তৈরি করাই আরএসএফের লক্ষ্য।

আরএসএফের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ

বিবিসির তথ্য অনুযায়ী, আরএসএফ ২০১৩ সালে গঠিত হয়, যার মূলভিত্তি ছিল জানজাওয়িদ মিলিশিয়ারা। দারফুরে কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ আফ্রিকান, অ-আরব জনগোষ্ঠীর বিরুদ্ধে গণহত্যা ও জাতিগত নিধনের অভিযোগ রয়েছে এই মিলিশিয়াদের বিরুদ্ধে।

পরবর্তীতে জেনারেল মোহাম্মদ হামদান দাগালো, যিনি হেমেদতি নামে পরিচিত, আরএসএফকে একটি শক্তিশালী আধা সামরিক বাহিনীতে রূপান্তর করেন। অভিযোগ রয়েছে, এই বাহিনী ইয়েমেন ও লিবিয়ার সংঘাতেও জড়িত ছিল।

দাগালো সুদানের কিছু স্বর্ণখনি নিয়ন্ত্রণ করেন এবং সেখান থেকে সংযুক্ত আরব আমিরাতে স্বর্ণ পাচার করেন বলেও অভিযোগ রয়েছে। সুদানের সেনাবাহিনী দাবি করেছে, আরএসএফকে আমিরাত সমর্থন দিচ্ছে এবং ড্রোন হামলায় সহায়তা করছে—যদিও এই অভিযোগ আমিরাত অস্বীকার করেছে।

এ ছাড়া পূর্ব লিবিয়ার প্রভাবশালী নেতা জেনারেল খলিফা হাফতার আরএসএফকে অস্ত্র ও যোদ্ধা সরবরাহে সহায়তা করেছেন বলেও অভিযোগ তুলেছে সুদানের সেনাবাহিনী, যা সংঘাতটির আঞ্চলিক মাত্রা আরও স্পষ্ট করে তুলেছে।
