Amid growing unrest, students and other demonstrators stormed and demolished the Dhanmondi-32 residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman last night in protest against Sheikh Hasina’s speech from India.
The attack was part of a series of violent incidents across the country, targeting properties linked to the ruling Awami League.
Sudha Sadan—the residence of Hasina’s late husband Wajed Miah—was also set on fire in Dhanmondi around 11:00pm, while businesses and homes of senior Awami League leaders were vandalized in different areas.
The unrest followed social media calls to dismantle what protesters described as “pilgrimage sites of fascism.”
Fire Service duty officer Rakibul Hasan confirmed receiving reports of fires at both Dhanmondi-32 and Sudha Sadan, with emergency teams responding to the situation. As of 1:30am, demolition work at Dhanmondi-32 was still ongoing.
