A mild heatwave is currently affecting 12 districts, including Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature in the capital increased by more than one degree Celsius within a day.
The Meteorological Department mentioned that such a heatwave in mid-March is somewhat unusual. The increase in temperature is mainly due to the reduction in wind flow and longer hours of sunlight. Additionally, the humidity level in the air is higher than usual, making the heat feel more intense, even though the heatwave is considered mild. This trend of hot weather may continue for another couple of days.
A mild heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature in a region is between 36 to 37.9 degrees Celsius. A moderate heatwave is declared when the temperature ranges from 38 to 39.9 degrees Celsius. A severe heatwave is considered when the temperature reaches 40 to 41.9 degrees Celsius, and an extreme heatwave is declared when the temperature exceeds 42 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department reported that on Sunday, the highest temperature in Dhaka was recorded at 36°C, while on Saturday, it was 34.9°C. The highest temperature in the country was recorded at 37.7°C in Baghabari, Sirajganj.
