Bangladesh: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has confirmed that the upcoming national election will be held in February next year, linking it directly to the implementation of the historic July Charter.
“The election will definitely take place in February. This is now part of the July Charter itself. What we declared is not mere words — we must honor it,” the Chief Adviser said during an “urgent meeting” with political parties and the National Consensus Commission on Wednesday night.
Professor Yunus emphasized that the signing of the July Charter, scheduled for Friday (October 17), will mark a national celebration of unity and democratic reform.
“You — the political leaders — have drafted the Charter together. Our government’s duty is to ensure a festive, inclusive election. That will complete our mission,” he said.
Expressing deep gratitude to the political parties and the Consensus Commission, the Chief Adviser praised their ability to turn the impossible into reality. “What you have achieved is not only remarkable in Bangladesh’s history but also significant in the political history of the world,” he remarked.
Calling the July Charter the next chapter of the student–people uprising, Yunus said the document embodies the true reforms the nation has long envisioned.
“The whole nation will join the grand celebration during the signing ceremony. The pens used to sign it will be preserved in the museum — people will never forget this moment,” he said.
Professor Yunus added that all related documents will be preserved and disseminated among the public in simple language so that everyone understands the spirit of consensus behind them. The discussions and debates leading to the Charter will also be documented through videos and books to serve as a national resource for future generations.
He concluded by saying, “The July Charter and the election are inseparable. The roadmap for national transition is already defined in this document. Our full effort will be to translate your vision into reality through the upcoming election and future governance.”
